Amish Farm Kids Remarkably Immune to Allergies

Amish children raised on rural farms in northern Indiana suffer from asthma and allergies less often even than Swiss farm kids, a group known to be relatively free from allergies, according to a new study.

The rates are very, very low,” said Dr. Mark Holbreich, the study’s lead author. “So there’s something that we feel is even more protective in the Amish” than in European farming communities.

What it is about growing up on farms — and Amish farms in particular — that seems to prevent allergies remains unclear.

Researchers have long observed the so-called “farm effect” — the low allergy and asthma rates found among kids raised on farms — in central Europe, but less is known about the influence of growing up on North American farms.

Holbreich, an allergist in Indianapolis, has been treating Amish communities in Indiana for two decades, but he noticed that very few Amish actually had any allergies.

The study did not determine why the kids who grew up on farms were less likely to develop asthma and allergies, but other research has pointed to exposure to microbes and contact with cows, in particular, to partially explain the farm effect (see Reuters Health story of May 2, 2012)....

The Barter Value of Skills

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 in Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Ready Nutrition by Tess Pennington

Recently, we talked about the necessity of learning skills to aid us in a survival situation.  Don’t underestimate the value of those skills for barter.  If the grid goes down, people may be left with no access to medical care, serious gaps in their knowledge or the inability to repair vital items.  If you possess those abilities, your skills will be in high demand.

In the situation of economic collapse, there will be a revival of the barter system.  To barter means to exchange your goods or services for someone else’s goods or services.  To complete a satisfactory barter transaction, each person must desire something from the other party.  Despite the potential of desperation, it’s morally imperative to be fair to the party that is most in need. Remember that one day, that person who is most in need may be you.

Right now, if something breaks, the replacement is only as far away as the closest Wal-Mart.  However, in the event of an economic collapse or a disaster that causes the trucks to stop running, it won’t be easy to replace broken items....

Michigan Govt Unleashes Armed Raids on Small Pig Farmers

Why does the state respond to people who sell homekilled meat in the same way that it responds to people who violently attack the state? … It’s because ubiquitous, small scale agriculture represents a greater threat to state power than armed resistance.

Via: Natural News:

NaturalNews can now confirm that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has, in total violation of the Fourth Amendment, conducted two armed raids on pig farmers in that state, one in Kalkaska County at Fife Lake and another in Cheboygan County. Staging raids involving six vehicles and ten armed men, DNA conducted unconstitutional, illegal and arguably criminal armed raids on these two farms with the intent of shooting all the farmers’ pigs under a bizarre new “Invasive Species Order” (ISO) that has suddenly declared traditional livestock to be an invasive species....

The Urban Farming Guys: Foraging and Mushrooms

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

This is a great video from the crew over at The Urban Farming Guys.  If you’re not familiar with them, I urge you to check out their previous videos on how they have taken 20 families, moved them into the ghettos of Kansas City, and transformed the neighborhood into a thriving, sustainable community farming project!  I really envy this crew and think they are doing amazing things!

This video is a short foraging/raw food expedition about mushrooms and morels.  They went into the woods near Kansas City and found over 200 morels!  These mushrooms easily run close to $50 per pound at fine grocery stores and restaurants and over $200/lb. on Amazon.com!

My favorite part?  The little kid at 2:59. “I found’em… in da’woods!”

Go here for more information about the Urban Farming Guys and their massive undertaking of purchasing an inner city, run-down school, multiple city lots and the programs they are implementing. They certainly have the stamp of approval and support from TruthisTreason.net!...

Produced by Kevin Hayden - TruthisTreason.net

for TruthisTreason.TV

Featuring Russ Michaud, owner of HomespunEnvironmental.com, a TruthisTreason.net Sponsor (only because I love their products!)

DIY, ceramic water filters for emergency preparedness and everyday use. Compare to the expensive Berkey systems, but much cheaper!

Also available are standard “candlestick-style” filters for Berkey systems, but the 4″ dome filter shown in the video will work just fine.

Also available are individual water bottles that can filter 60 gallons for ~$20. Many others cost 10x that amount.  One of my favorite products from Homespun is the Hanging Bag Filter that can churn out over 100 gallons per day. This could provide you with ample bartering material!

Filmed at a semi-annual camping event for serious preppers....

Strawberry Win: Methyl Iodide Pesticide Taken Off the Market

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

In yet one more minor win for food freedom, one of the most talked about pesticides of recent times, methyl iodide, was taken off the market in California.  This particular pesticide is used as a fumigant in California strawberry fields, where the vast majority of the nation’s strawberries are grown and harvested.

Arysta LifeScience, the makers of the dangerous and toxic fumigant, stated this week that they would be suspending sales of the product in all US markets.  While staying extremely vague as to why, Amy Yoder, the head of Arysta LifeScience’s North American division, simply said that the decision was based on its “economic viability in the US marketplace.”

Hmmm.  Or, it might have something to do with the fact that California Governor Jerry Brown just appointed an organic farmer as the head of the Department of Pesticide Regulation and he has already spent half a million dollars exploring less toxic alternatives for California crops.  Not to mention that several Central Coast counties have already banned the chemical, which is used to sterilize the soil before strawberries and other high-dollar row crops are planted....

Most Americans take for granted the intricate systems that make it possible for us to engage in seemingly mundane day to day tasks like filling up our gas tanks, loading up our shopping carts at the local grocery store, obtaining necessary medications, and even pouring ourselves a clean glass of water. When we wake up each morning we just expect that all of these things will work today the same way they worked yesterday. Very few have considered the complexity involved in the underlying infrastructure that keeps goods, services and commerce in America flowing. Fewer still have ever spent the time to contemplate the fragility of these systems or the consequences on food, water, health care, the financial system, and the economy if they are interrupted.

Hayden’s Note:

I’ve written extensively on this topic, and Mac’s report on Just in Time trucking hits the nail on the head.  Check out some of my past reports on the devastation and consequences we can expect when trucks stop rolling: Empty Shelves: Hurricanes, Disasters, and Civil Unrest – a Contingency Plan, along with Bartering, Inflation, and Growing a Garden

report prepared for legislators and business leaders by the American Trucking Associations highlights just how critical our just-in-time inventory and delivery systems are, and assesses the impact on the general population in the event of an emergency or incident of national significance that disrupts the truck transportation systems which are responsible for carrying some ten billion tons of commodities and supplies across the United States each year....

Six Steps to Create Your Own Organic Permaculture Garden Thumbnail

Six Steps to Create Your Own Organic Permaculture Garden

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 in Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Natural News by Tara Green

Organic gardening avoids the use of chemicals to make plants grow or protect them from insects, relying instead on natural gardening principles used for thousands of years. Permaculture organic gardening goes a step further and also emphasizes growing plants sustainably, working with rather than against the grain of the natural environment. Permaculture organic gardening is growing in popularity as more people realize that it offers an inexpensive and relatively low-maintenance way to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Choosing A Location

Observe your property at different times of day. Consider which areas receive the most sun, which are in shade for much of the day. Depending on where you live, if sunshine is a scarce commodity, you will want to expose plants to receive as much as possible. On the other hand, in desert regions, you will not want your plants to be in the area most likely to be parched by sun exposure. Also think protecting your garden from the paths where strong winds tend to blow through your property....

I built my 10 x 20 house in 2005 for about $10,000 in materials, including all furnishings. It is built on six poles, set two feet into the ground, that support the floor and roof. There is no framing in the walls except at the door and the large window. The walls are rigid foam insulation, R21, covered with ½ inch sheetrock and all glued together. The ceiling has R38 fiberglass insulation, and the floor has R19 fiberglass insulation. I spend about $100 a year on propane for heating, cooking, and water heating.

The house is located in the hills of Northern California. I live in it full time. The house is set up for one person, but you could easily put a double bed by the door where the tall bookcase stands. If you did this, you might want to move the window.

I have a three-way RV under-counter refrigerator that I run on electricity. For hot water, I have a ‘heat before use’ RV water heater.  I turn it on for 15 – 20 minutes then off, and it generates enough hot water for a shower and runs on propane....

Ethanol and Fuel Considerations in a Grid-Down Scenario

Alcohol Can Be a Gas – David Blume

I interviewed David Blume years ago when Truth is Treason was a small, internet radio show on Oracle Broadcasting. He has some extremely fascinating ideas concerning ethanol and fuel, and from an emergency preparedness view, alcohol is invaluable!

Fuel, first-aid, bartering, ability to create or boost a small economy, farming, animal feed, reduction of waste, tangible goods, etc.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t make gasoline for my vehicle, especially in a grid-down scenario. However, I can make ethanol.

For the naysayers who have been sold on the whole, “Ethanol is bad for cars!” campaign, realize this comes from Big Oil. Cars originally ran on ethanol, and with a few simple, minor changes, can easily run on ethanol again. While you might experience a 10% drop in MPG, you gain horsepower (race cars use pure ethanol!), sustainability, and can be made in your backyard for as little as one dollar per gallon. I’m no math whiz, but that’s much better than relying on Big Oil.

Pick up the amazing book, “Alcohol Can Be a Gas” here at Amazon.com, and help TruthisTreason.net gain a small commission (at no extra charge to you!)....

Doomsday Executive Order or Govt Preparedness? Either Way, It’s Tyrannical

“In a nutshell, it’s the blueprint for Peacetime Martial Law and it gives the president the power to take just about anything deemed necessary for “National Defense”, whatever they decide that is.” (The Intel Hub)

While millions of people have been preparing for the possibility of a catastrophic event by relocating to rural homesteads or farms, as well as stockpiling food, water, personal defense armaments and other essential supplies with the intention of utilizing these preparations if the worst happens, the latest executive order signed by President Obama on March 16, 2012 makes clear that in the event of a nationally deemed emergency all of these resources will fall under the authority of the United States government.

Hayden’s Counterpoint:

While I find this EO to be interesting, and most certainly enjoy the work of Activist Post, Intel Hub, and SHTF Plan, I must agree with Doug Mataconis on this matter:

It all sounds pretty scary, and it wasn’t long before the usual suspects were citing this as evidence of some kind of plan for martial law, just as there were people on the left and far-right in asserting that George Bush was going to declare martial law and cancel the elections in 2004 and 2008.

Americans Will Need Black Markets to Survive

As Americans come to grips with a severe financial hangover, the American economy will adapt to meet the peoples’ needs.  After 30 years of easy credit, subprime mortgages, zero interest loans and binge spending, the economy has imploded.  The wizards of Wall Street continue casting spells and weaving their magic, as the mainstream media rattles on about the wizards’ omnipotence like an rickety player piano.

Meanwhile, back in the world of reality, some Americans are beginning to realize the necessity of more contemporary ways of doing business.  As decreasing wages, increasing taxes, stifling regulations and a mortally wounded economy, are forcing people to do business a different way.  If current conditions continue, “black markets” will emerge, giving local economies an IV to keep them stable.

The global Black Market has already surpassed $1 trillion in sales.  The United States alone already accounts for more than $600 billion, almost three times the nearest competitor- China.  Americans, seeing that the economy for the “99%” still isn’t healthy, are doing an end around to oppressive, financial restraints imposed by the government and Wall Street.  When times become too financially difficult and unbearable in the face of financial repression (think Prohibition and the War on Drugs) black markets spring up like mushrooms after a morning dew.  The economic intrusions of a government gone haywire include repression of raw milk sales, tracking gold and silver purchases over $600, the IRS considering taxing barter exchanges and the FDA having jurisdiction over personal gardens.  Citizens are creating new economic systems that serve their own interests outside of corporate, centralized markets....

EcoCity Urban Farm Takes Root Amid Strip Malls

EcoCity Farms grows vegetables in winter. The Edmonston, Maryland, farm near Washington is an unlikely place to harvest produce in any season. Its four climate-controlled greenhouses stand out in an otherwise bleak landscape dotted with small homes, strip malls, and car repair shops.

Over the past two years, the farm has become a magnet for the community, attracting volunteers like Marcy Clark, who homeschools her four children. On this day, Clark uses EcoCity Farms as a lesson in sustainable agriculture.

“It’s important that the children understand the connection between the food that they eat, the soil, the air, the pollution, how all this is connected to their well-being,” she says.

The Clark children – Hannah, Caleb, John and Alston – weed and harvest fresh rows of spinach, mustard greens, lettuce, Swiss chard and carrots.

Hannah Clark, 17, says she likes to garden.

Her 11-year-old brother, Caleb, agrees. “It may not be like fun, fun, but it is fun because you’re learning and not like writing something out on a piece of paper.”

The other Clark boys, John, 13, and Alston, 15, say the farm has changed their perspective on food....

Like so many generations before, it was my father who first taught me about tools as I was growing up.  The names of the tools, their uses, how to properly care for them, and what not to do so I could avoid injury were all part of the lessons he ingrained in me.  Early in my adult life, I spent eight years in the military repairing fixed-wing jet aircraft and later, helicopters.  After my time in service was over, I spent several years working in the emergency services sector, including wild land fire fighting and emergency management.  Tools have been a big part of my ability to earn a living and play a vital role in my prepping, my ability to rebuild infrastructure after a disaster, gardening, and homesteading.

I talk many times on TruthisTreason.net about investing in tangibles for both wealth protection and bartering.  Quality tools are an integral part of those “tangibles.”  Read on to learn which ones you need!...

For years, I’ve been involved in various circles of organic gardening, local produce, food co-ops, alternative architecture, and local currencies.  It’s been a passion of mine for quite some time.  In 2008, as I was campaigning for Ron Paul’s Presidential bid, I stumbled across a small website that was offering an experiment in alternative housing, garden co-ops, and liberty-oriented living.  What does that mean, you ask?  I wondered the same thing and looked into it more.

At first, I expected this to be some crazy commune idea and I instantly conjured up images of people living in run-down RVs, huts, and wearing lots of tie-dye.  While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not my idea of an ideal neighborhood or living experiment.  But their website was geared towards liberty lovers and self-reliant people in west Texas, so it couldn’t be too bad.

A brief excerpt:

The process involves forming a co-op of people buying “shares” in the community and these people would be granted land use at a minimum of 1 acre per share, for as long as they homesteaded the land.

In times of uncertainty, we humans like to stockpile and hoard.  We seek information that will keep us safe and provide for our well-being.  One of these topics will invariably center around medical knowledge or first-aid in case of an accident, sickness, or injury.  Many of us already have a well-rounded medical kit, or basic skills in how to treat traumatic injuries.  But one question I see and hear a lot of people talk about is medicine, and their lack of concrete, factual information when it comes to antibiotics – and specifically, whether it is safe to use animal antibiotics in humans.

Many other questions typically revolve around,

“Where can I find prescription-quality medicines?”

“My doctor won’t prescribe me common antibiotics for long-term disasters or bugging out.”

“What medicines should I stockpile?”

What this article will attempt to provide is the answer to these very questions, and more.  While I am no fan of Big Pharma, I  understand the amazing capabilities and modern need for some medicines, such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, and Penicillin.  There are many natural antibiotics, and antibacterials, in nature....

I recently added a vegetable grow bed to my existing fish and water lily pond.  Good, healthy bacteria grow within a balanced fish pond in order to help break down fish waste.  This bacteria is important to the entire aquaponics system.

If you are starting a new pond or system, add “pond starter” to help boost the bacteria population. It is a good idea to add more bacteria every few weeks as there are no downsides to recharging the bacterial environment.

Hayden’s Note:

This is for new ponds.  Established ponds should have a healthy balance and cycle already in place, or means for natural bacterial regrowth.  Also, I would recommend “larger-than-fish tank type” diameter pebbles or rocks to be used in your aquaponic beds.  The more surface area that bacteria can attach to, the better!  About 1/2″ or even 3/4″ should work well!  Also, be sure to check out the related aquaponics articles at the end.

The grow bed I used is a simple “under the bed” storage container, and I placed it on the edge of the pond....

James Cameron, the Hollywood producer responsible for blockbuster films like Terminator, Titanic and Avatar, is reportedly preparing to exit stage left. While the move for the Canadian born Cameron may initially be perceived as a rejection or denouncement of American policies and ideals, Cameron, who has made campaign donations to the Democrat Party in the past, most notably during the 2004 Presidential election where he supported democrat John Kerry, may have ulterior motivations, as evidenced by where he’s planning on moving and what he’s planning on doing once he gets there.

From time to time we get a glimpse into the goings on of the well connected. This may be one of those moments:

Cameron has successfully applied to buy 1,067 hectares (2,636 acres) of farmland in New Zealand. In an application filed with the New Zealand Overseas Investment Office, Cameron says he and his family “intend to reside indefinitely in New Zealand and are acquiring the property to reside on and operate as a working farm.”

Gardening and Permaculture: Companion Planting Chart

Posted on Jan 13, 2012 in Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Pioneer Living

Companion planting makes use of specific plants as insect repellant and growth stimulators. The chemical make-up of some plants are simply unattractive to various insects and attractive to certain plant growth.

Planting beans near or among potatoes will limit the amount of Colorado potato beetles present. The potatoes, in turn, discourage Mexican bean beetles. Chives planted among lettuce and peas limit aphids. Radishes often stop striped cucumber beetles. Geraniums deter Japanese beetles. Other flowers, such as marigolds, chrysanthemums, cosmos, and nasturtiums add color while acting as a general insect repellent in your garden.

The following chart will help you plan your companion garden to aid in deterring the harmful insects, as well as providing natural growth stimulators for your plants.  This can also be referred to as permaculture gardening.

Andrea Lippke from the New York Times writes an article about a Seattle women named Michelle de la Vega who takes on the conversion of a 250 square foot garage into a tiny home after a divorce. To save money she takes on the job as the contractor and with lots of reclaimed materials converts this old garage into a beautiful home.

“At that time I was coming out of the ashes,” she said, “and knew I needed to come up with a good survival strategy for starting over as a single person.”

Hayden’s Note:

I found this little excerpt at the above website, recommended to me by a new reader of TruthisTreason.net.  While the author never mentions Voluntaryism, I found this piece to adequately sum up some of its aspects and contradict it in regards to work ethics and private transactions.  However, the main point here is radical self-reliance – a tenet of Burning Man and off-grid homesteaders everywhere – enabling one to rise above the rat race.  All in all, this is a great read and I highly suggest you explore the Soil and Health Library linked above.

Life on Earth could be easy and far more pleasant if only people were entirely rational about pursuing their interests and passions. But we aren’t. Scott and Helen Nearing spent decades on their self-sufficient homestead demonstrating that achieving our daily survival needs could be accomplished in only a few hours of work a day–if we did not have taxes to pay and produced most of our necessities ourselves. But as things are currently organized on Earth, most people in industrial countries are obliged to expend most of their energy, most of their lives, working for what they have been programmed to consider as “necessities.” Sometimes I think we have created our planet this way because we would be bored if things were too easy....

Alone in the Wilderness: a Documentary of Simple Living

“Alone in the Wilderness” is the story of Dick Proenneke, living in the Alaska wilderness in 1968. He filmed his adventures and day-to-day life using an 8mm camera and tripod. The footage, along with the contents of his journals, were put together in a fascinating documentary.

I watched the entire thing and I couldn’t help but think, “This guy has the solution.” Although it is nearly impossible for most of us to replicate what he did, his lifestyle is certainly an ideal we should all tend to. Free from the bonds of materialism, debts, and mass media indoctrination, watching this tough old man appreciating nature and just doing what he has to do to stay alive is a vivid reminder that all of the rest is just a mere illusion.

Hayden’s Note:

It is with this spirit that I am building the Elysian Fields Project!

After experiencing the societal collapse during and after Hurricane Katrina, I have a distinct fondness and appreciation for living life as it was intended, and to a degree, simply surviving....
