This paper discusses the two main styles of ceramic filter cartridges that are currently on the market.  These are the ‘candle’ filter and the ‘dome’ filter.  I often get questions on whether one is better than the other and have also seen several DIY blogs on the internet showing both of these.  I figured it was a good idea to write a short paper on this topic to add as a reference to the technical notes on my website and to help folks interested in researching this.

For those who may be unfamiliar with ceramic water filters, here is a brief overview.

Cut-away diagram of a DIY water filter. Much cheaper than the Big Berks.

The ceramic water filter cartridge consists of a ceramic shell, containing colloidal silver and enclosing some amount of activated carbon.  The shell has very small pore openings that allow water to pass through but are too small for bacteria.  The silver keeps bacteria from growing on the shell, and the activated charcoal adsorbs chemicals that are present in the water.  ...

Collection of Tiny Homes, Off-Grid Cabins, and Shipping Container Houses

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

One of my biggest passions is alternative architecture and radical self-reliance.  I try to showcase it regularly here on TruthisTreason.net, but it’s been awhile since I have posted a good collection of projects.  So, without further ado, here are a few abodes that have caught my eye recently!

Bootjack Cabin

The story of a young couple building a modern cabin off the grid in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

We are Caleb and Marci Larsen. We met in art school and got married in 2003. In the past eight years we’ve lived in Kalamazoo, MI, Portland, ME, Seattle, WA, Providence, RI, Tulum, Mexico, Hancock, MI, and now, Calumet, MI. This nomadic lifestyle has mostly been for fun, to experience different cities and parts of the world.

We’ve decided to build a cabin (‘camp’ in local parlance) and will be blogging about the experience. From our inspirations, plans, triumphs, to our failures, frustrations, and utter devastations – this is our return to Bootjack.

Everyone agrees that water is a must have essential at the top of the list for survival preparations. Consequently, there are a lot of products on the market for cleaning up contaminated water to make it fit for human consumption. This paper takes a quick look at the advantages of ceramic cartridges versus other filter types and discusses a few key issues.

Hayden’s Note:

These make great holiday gifts for your friends and family that already have Berkey systems or can’t get one due to their price! Homespun filters can be used as replacements for half the price, or build your own two-chamber, gravity fed water filter system for a fraction of those other, fancy systems!

What is a ceramic water filter?

The ceramic filter consists of a porous ceramic shell and usually is sold as a sealed cartridge that contains some additional water purification media. A picture of a dome shaped filter is shown below but they can be manufactured in various shapes and sizes....

Congress Making it Nearly Impossible to Pass on a Farm to Your Children – 55% Estate Tax

Posted on Nov 22, 2012 in Constitutional & Liberty Issues, Economic News, Political Issues, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden  – TruthisTreason.net

If you have a farm or a small business, would you like to pass it on to your children when you die? Well, unless Congress does something, it is going to become much, much harder to do that starting next year.

Right now, there is a 5 million dollar estate tax exemption and anything above that is taxed at 35 percent. But on January 1st, the exemption will go down to 1 million dollars and the tax rate will go up to 55 percent. A lot of liberals are very excited about this, because they believe that the government will be soaking wealthy people like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. But the truth is that a lot of farms, ranches and small businesses will be absolutely devastated by this change in the tax law.

There are many farmers and ranchers out there today that do not make much money but are sitting on tracts of land that are worth millions of dollars. According to the American Farm Bureau, approximately 97 percent of all farms and ranches in the United States would be subject to the estate tax if the exemption was reduced to just a million dollars.

Living Small in a Big World: Alternative Architecture, Tiny Homes, and Strawbale

Andrew Morrison, of StrawBale.com, is interviewed on living small, the role of straw bale construction as a solution for housing, and his experience of living in a pop-up tent trailer in Baja for several months after selling more than half of his belongings.

Hayden’s Note:

While I looove alternative architecture and tiny homes, it is not for some “save the planet” motive.  My obsession with tiny homes is rooted in the evolving shift in perception and understanding that we need to get back to basics, natural settings, and efficiency, coupled with the ability to create Tiny Towns, build small communities, and become radically self-reliant; throwing off the shackles of not only an out of control government, but being truly self sufficient in as many areas as possible.

Portland, Maine architect Will Winkelman provided this restoration on a 1959 Chevrolet Viking short bus. His client was looking for something flexible and movable for both wilderness exploration as well as being functional and funky for a guest bedroom at home.

To make it funky, Winkleman infused an alternative life into the bus. With beads, dangles, and paisleys, they brought the 60′s lifestyle into the bus.

The Post-Collapse Realities of Your Survival Location

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

I wanted to put a few thoughts out there about the realities of your survival location. To read what is out there in terms of opinion and advice, it appears that to survive any coming apocalypse you need to be in a fortified self-sustaining retreat somewhere out in the boonies, with three years of food in the basement and the ability to grow food plus animals.

Good stuff; you will be really well positioned if that is where you are with your preparations. The reality for many is that they simply do not have that. For whatever reason, they may be in an urban or suburban environment. They may have nowhere else to realistically ‘bug out’ to. They may have a goal to achieve the retreat, but are not there yet, or have bug out land that is fairly basic and requires them to move to it following a collapse.Let me first say that this post is not so concerned with the kind of short-term natural disaster that would involve you bugging out with little choice — perhaps a wildfire or earthquake or similar....

Education After the Collapse: Free eBook

Posted on Sep 04, 2012 in Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Backdoor Survival, by Gaye Levy

Todd Sepulveda, the chief editor of Prepper Website, has released a free eBook, titled, “Education After the Collapse”.  In it, Todd describes a fictional community surviving in the aftermath of an economic collapse. It is not a pretty picture and most certainly it will make you want to sit back and think (as well as ratchet up the preps more than just a little bit.)

But his intent is not to scare and create panic. Rather, with this brief introduction, the intent is to set you on a track for thinking about an aspect of prepping you rarely hear about: the education of our children and the leaders of the next generation.

School When There is No Classroom

Using his background and passion as an educator, Todd writes about teaching and puts it in the context of the old days – not unlike Laura Ingalls in her series of books titled Little House on the Prairie. Back then traditional schoolhouses were few and far between. They were predominately in the cities and towns and only randomly scattered in rural communities....

Giradora Foot-Powered Washer and Spin Dryer for Off-Grid Applications and Post-SHTF

Alex Cabunoc, based in Los Angeles, has developed ‘Giradora’, a human-powered washer and spin dryer which has been designed to increase the efficiency and experience of washing clothes in areas which do not have access to running water and power.  This could be used with great advantage in a grid-down scenario, off-grid homestead or cabin, and even while camping!

The project evolved at the Art Center College of Design, where students were challenged by a South American NGO to create a product as part of their ‘Safe Agua Peru’ project, aiming to alleviate water poverty in the slums of Lima, Peru.

The Giradora seeks to make the process of cleaning more ergonomic, economic, and ecological in the long run.

the user sits upon the drum-like basin which is powered by foot making it ergonomic

Targeted towards families earning between $4-10 USD per day, the resulting unit costs less than $40 USD.

The design is composed of a drum, whose shape is similar to that of a water barrel.

Congressman Bartlett: “Every Citizen Should Develop an Individual Emergency Plan to Prepare for the Absence of Government Assistance for Extended Periods”

Posted on Aug 25, 2012 in Alphabet Agencies & Operations, Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Political Issues, Science & Technology, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

In the documentary Urban Danger, Maryland’s Congressional Representative Roscoe Bartlett warned those who can to move their families out of major cities.

Outspoken in his belief that each individual American should prepare for a crisis where the government would be unable to provide for the basic needs of the national population, Bartlett has himself created a hideaway deep in the West Virginia forest. His cabin runs on independent power, he has put away food and canning equipment, stockpiled supplies for the long-term, and is ready for a worst-case scenario should it ever come to pass.

“We don’t really think of those today, because it’s so convenient to go to the supermarket,” he cautions. “But you know, you’re planning because the supermarket may not always be there.”

The electrical grid could fail tomorrow, he frequently warns. Food would disappear from the shelves. Water would no longer flow from the pipes. Money might become worthless. People could turn on each other, and millions would die.

Bartlett’s biggest concern, the vulnerability of our national power grid, is justified through extensive research by private organizations and the US government alike....

The Most Often Forgotten Survival Preparations

Posted on Aug 04, 2012 in Alt Energy, Tiny Homes, & Structures, Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Alt-Market by Brandon Smith (This is a great article!)

I think it’s safe to say with some conviction that in the year of 2012, the concept of survival prepping is NOT an alien one to most Americans.  When National Geographic decides there is a viable market for a prepper TV show (no matter how misrepresentative of true preppers it may be), when Walmart starts stocking shelves with long term emergency food storage kits, when survivalism in general becomes one of the few growing business markets in the midst of an otherwise disintegrating economy; you know that the methodology has gone “mainstream”.  There is a noticeable and expanding concern amongst Americans that we are, indeed, on the verge of something new and unfortunate.

Is it the big bad hoodoo of the soon to expire Mayan Calendar?  For a few, maybe, but for the majority of us, no.  That jazz is a carnival sideshow designed to make the prepping culture appear ridiculous.  We don’t need to believe in magical prophecies to know that there is a catastrophic road ahead; all we have to do is look at the stark realities of our current circumstances. ...

Oregon Man Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail for Collecting Rainwater on His Property

A rural Oregon man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater.

Gary Harrington of Eagle Point, Ore., says he plans to appeal his conviction in Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court on nine misdemeanor charges under a 1925 law for having what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property – and for filling the reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff.

“The government is bullying,” Harrington told CNSNews.com in an interview Thursday.

“They’ve just gotten to be big bullies and if you just lay over and die and give up, that just makes them bigger bullies. So, we as Americans, we need to stand on our constitutional rights, on our rights as citizens and hang tough. This is a good country, we’ll prevail,” he said.

The court has given Harrington two weeks to report to the Jackson County Jail to begin serving his sentence.

Harrington said the case first began in 2002, when state water managers told him there were complaints about the three “reservoirs” – ponds – on his more than 170 acres of land....
