Kevin Hayden –

In times of uncertainty, we humans like to stockpile and hoard.  We seek information that will keep us safe and provide for our well-being.  One of these topics will invariably center around medical knowledge or first-aid in case of an accident, sickness, or injury.  Many of us already have a well-rounded medical kit, or basic skills in how to treat traumatic injuries.  But one question I see and hear a lot of people talk about is medicine, and their lack of concrete, factual information when it comes to antibiotics – and specifically, whether it is safe to use animal antibiotics in humans.

Many other questions typically revolve around,

“Where can I find prescription-quality medicines?”

“My doctor won’t prescribe me common antibiotics for long-term disasters or bugging out.”

“What medicines should I stockpile?”

What this article will attempt to provide is the answer to these very questions, and more.  While I am no fan of Big Pharma, I  understand the amazing capabilities and modern need for some medicines, such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, and Penicillin.  There are many natural antibiotics, and antibacterials, in nature.  ...

Satisfy Your Bacon Craving with Organic Turkey Crisps, Avoid the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

The meat-eaters among you may truly believe that bacon makes everything better; and folks from Iron Chefs to everyday-Joe’s will pay up to $35 a pound for gourmet bacon cuts. However, these delectable pieces of smoked pig are highly processed with numerous toxic chemicals such as nitrites, sodium nitrate, and other products that cause cancer. In particular, your risk of pancreatic cancer increases two-fold after eating processed meats such as bacon and sausages, reports the British Journal of Cancer.  As little as one sausage or two slices of bacon can increase your risk factors for pancreatic cancer by 51 percent.
If you’re one of the devoted, living on a bacon diet, adding it to brownies, crumbling it on ice cream or just eating it plain — think about this before you eat it again. Some of the chemicals used to give bacon its distinctive and delicious flavor are altered by your body into toxins that actually change the nature of your DNA, says The Guardian.  ...

People have been misinformed about the tragedy at Fukushima and its consequences. There is a continuing cover up, the reactors have not been stabilized, and radiation continues to be released. The Japanese College of Intravenous Therapy (JCIT) has recently released a video for people wishing to learn more about how to protect themselves from contamination by taking large doses of vitamin C.

Japanese Government Minimizes Danger; Ignores Vitamin C

In the fall of 2011, JCIT presented a study that Fukushima workers had abnormality gene expression, which may be avoided using dietary antioxidants, especially vitamin C. The data was presented in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. The JCIT sent letters to the government urging the government to tell the people how they may protect themselves from radiation. To date, the recommendation has been ignored by Japanese government and TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company).

Linus Pauling gained the Nobel Peace Prize in part based on his calculations of the number of deaths from nuclear weapons fallout.[1] He was supported by physicist and father of the Soviet bomb Andrei Sakharov, who also later received the Nobel Prize for peace.[2] These and other scientists estimated that there would be an extra 10,000 deaths worldwide for each megaton nuclear test in the atmosphere....

Amish Farm Kids Remarkably Immune to Allergies

Posted on May 07, 2012 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Amish children raised on rural farms in northern Indiana suffer from asthma and allergies less often even than Swiss farm kids, a group known to be relatively free from allergies, according to a new study.

The rates are very, very low,” said Dr. Mark Holbreich, the study’s lead author. “So there’s something that we feel is even more protective in the Amish” than in European farming communities.

What it is about growing up on farms — and Amish farms in particular — that seems to prevent allergies remains unclear.

Researchers have long observed the so-called “farm effect” — the low allergy and asthma rates found among kids raised on farms — in central Europe, but less is known about the influence of growing up on North American farms.

Holbreich, an allergist in Indianapolis, has been treating Amish communities in Indiana for two decades, but he noticed that very few Amish actually had any allergies.

The study did not determine why the kids who grew up on farms were less likely to develop asthma and allergies, but other research has pointed to exposure to microbes and contact with cows, in particular, to partially explain the farm effect (see Reuters Health story of May 2, 2012)....

Recently there has been a new victory in the ongoing, undermanned, and heavily justified war on water fluoridation in the southwest United States.

The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico has made the auspicious decision to effectively end all artificial water fluoridation within the city’s water supply.

It was reported first by local news authority, KOB news channel 4, earlier this month that the city, in order to save money and consequently save the over half million local population from the many detrimental effects of fluoride in the water supply, had removed the addition entirely.

High Fructose Corn Syrup isn’t Sugar: The Lawsuits and Health Effects

Sugar producers think recent marketing efforts by manufacturers of high-fructose corn syrup aren’t so sweet.

In a lawsuit filed last year, three sugar distributors say that equating HFCS with real sugar — with slogans like “your body can’t tell the difference” — misleads consumers, trying to offset growing customer concerns about obesity and diabetes.

Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, said the lawsuit is without merit, as HFCS and sugar are nutritionally and metabolically equivalent.

“Sugar is sugar,” Erickson said.

Hayden’s Note:

Ms. Erickson recently contacted me regarding my upcoming article on high fructose corn syrup, GMO corn, and how sugars effect the human body. The email was certainly attempting to persuade my opinion on HFCS’ effects.  But that’s what lobbyists are paid to do, right?  The Corn Refiners’ Association essentially represents the entire HFCS industry and is little more than a massive lobbying and PR front....

Autism Linked to High Fructose Corn Syrup, Industrial Food

Posted on Apr 17, 2012 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Common Dreams

A new study by Clinical Epigenetics, a peer-reviewed journal that focuses largely on diseases, has found that the rise in autism in the United States could be linked to the industrial food system, specifically the prevalence of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in the American diet. The study, published yesterday online, explores how mineral deficiencies could impact how the human body rids itself of common toxic chemicals like mercury and pesticides. The report comes just after a different report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, documented a startling rise in autism in the United States.

The report’s key findings:

  • Autism and related disorders affect brain development. The current study sought to determine how environmental and dietary factors, like HFCS consumption, might combine to contribute to the disorder.
  • Consumption of HFCS, for example, is linked to the dietary loss of zinc, which interferes with the elimination of heavy metals from the body. Many heavy metals like mercury, arsenic and cadmium are potent toxins with adverse effects on brain development in the young.
  • HFCS consumption can also impact levels of other beneficial minerals, including calcium.

Michigan Govt Unleashes Armed Raids on Small Pig Farmers

Why does the state respond to people who sell homekilled meat in the same way that it responds to people who violently attack the state? … It’s because ubiquitous, small scale agriculture represents a greater threat to state power than armed resistance.

Via: Natural News:

NaturalNews can now confirm that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has, in total violation of the Fourth Amendment, conducted two armed raids on pig farmers in that state, one in Kalkaska County at Fife Lake and another in Cheboygan County. Staging raids involving six vehicles and ten armed men, DNA conducted unconstitutional, illegal and arguably criminal armed raids on these two farms with the intent of shooting all the farmers’ pigs under a bizarre new “Invasive Species Order” (ISO) that has suddenly declared traditional livestock to be an invasive species....

The Urban Farming Guys: Foraging and Mushrooms

Kevin Hayden –

This is a great video from the crew over at The Urban Farming Guys.  If you’re not familiar with them, I urge you to check out their previous videos on how they have taken 20 families, moved them into the ghettos of Kansas City, and transformed the neighborhood into a thriving, sustainable community farming project!  I really envy this crew and think they are doing amazing things!

This video is a short foraging/raw food expedition about mushrooms and morels.  They went into the woods near Kansas City and found over 200 morels!  These mushrooms easily run close to $50 per pound at fine grocery stores and restaurants and over $200/lb. on!

My favorite part?  The little kid at 2:59. “I found’em… in da’woods!”

Go here for more information about the Urban Farming Guys and their massive undertaking of purchasing an inner city, run-down school, multiple city lots and the programs they are implementing. They certainly have the stamp of approval and support from!...

If you are unfamiliar with the “Primal Diet” or “Paleo” meal idea, the best way I can describe it would be doing away with the refined carbs, the grains, the sugar and the like.  Raw foodism is very similar – a lifestyle that promotes the consumption of uncooked, unprocessed, and often organic foods as a large percentage of the diet.  The Primal food-style adds a lot of quality grass-fed and organic animal meats and healthy fats.

Ask yourself, “What would a caveman have access to?”  Certainly not modern farming techniques and a never-ending supply of GMO corn and wheat.  Certainly not mass quantities of bleached starches and monosodium glutamate.  The human body has been constantly evolving for millions of years and it is an incredible machine when fed fuel that it is geared for.  You don’t put Kool-Aid in your truck and expect it to run very well because it’s not designed for it.  Likewise, the human body is not designed nor adapted to operate efficiently to the Westernized surge in cereal grains, refined pastries, chemically preserved snacks, excess fiber, and lots of alcohol (also mostly grain)....

Fast Food America: Hospitals Serve Up McDonald’s to Patients

Posted on Apr 12, 2012 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Activist Post by Mike Barrett

Its no surprise that fast food is extremely unhealthy. The processed junk food lacks essential vitamins and nutrients, while they are also concocted with numerous health-hazardous substances and chemicals which should not be found in food — let alone be consumed.

It is safe to say that no healthy individual would or should be consuming fast food, and certainly no sick individuals who are depleted of nutrients (as a result of avoiding real food) should be consuming it either.

So what in the world are fast food chains like McDonald’s doing in places like hospital cafeterias?

It turns out that some hospitals, such as a hospital in Des Moines, think nothing of the fast food placement. Since 1988, the Des Moines hospital has been blessed by a McDonald’s fast food restaurant, and management seems to want no change.

As expected, the hospital has undergone much scrutiny for its decision to host a McDonald’s in its institution, with some of the disapproval coming from nation-wide junk food critic Corporate Accountability International....

Top 10 Herbs and Spices for Boosting Immune System

Posted on Apr 11, 2012 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

The body’s defense system is only as dependable as the support it gets. Some people are just blessed with a good set of genes that ensure a strong immune system. For others who are not as lucky, they must work for immunity by observing proper nutrition, sufficient rest, a healthy active lifestyle, plenty of sun and reduced stress. Recent studies have shown that getting enough of these while cutting down on unhealthy habits and avoiding processed foods restores the immune system to peak performance.

Observing proper sanitation also plays a vital role in keeping the immune system working. It is recognized as the best preventive medicine and its actual practice can reduce outbreaks and diseases, translating to significant economic, environmental as well as social benefits.

Antibiotics and vaccination as remedies to assist the body’s defenses against disease have now been debunked by recent findings. Of late, antibiotics have been shown to attack beneficial bacteria in the stomach and suppress immune functions.

110,000+ Active-Duty Army Troops on Meds

In a small but growing number of cases across the nation, lawyers are blaming the U.S. military’s heavy use of psychotropic drugs for their clients’ aberrant behavior and related health problems. Such defenses have rarely gained traction in military or civilian courtrooms, but Burke’s case provides the first important indication that military psychiatrists and court-martial judges are not blind to what can happen when troops go to work medicated.

After two long-running wars with escalating levels of combat stress, more than 110,000 active-duty Army troops last year were taking prescribed antidepressants, narcotics, sedatives, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety drugs, according to figures recently disclosed to The Times by the U.S. Army surgeon general. Nearly 8% of the active-duty Army is now on sedatives and more than 6% is on antidepressants — an eightfold increase since 2005.

“We have never medicated our troops to the extent we are doing now…. And I don’t believe the current increase in suicides and homicides in the military is a coincidence,” said Bart Billings, a former military psychologist who hosts an annual conference on combat stress.

Monsanto Threatens to Sue Vermont if Legislators Pass a GMO Labeling Bill

The world’s most hated corporation is at it again, this time in Vermont. Elected officials are abandoning public interest and the peoples’  will in the face of corporate intimidation.

Despite overwhelming public support and support from a clear majority of Vermont’s Agriculture Committee, Vermont legislators are dragging their feet on a proposed GMO labeling bill. Why? Because Monsanto has threatened to sue the state if the bill passes.

The popular legislative bill requiring mandatory labels on genetically engineered food (H-722) is languishing in the Vermont House Agriculture Committee, with only four weeks left until the legislature adjourns for the year. Despite thousands of emails and calls from constituents who overwhelmingly support mandatory labeling, despite the fact that a majority (6 to 5) of Agriculture Committee members support passage of the measure, Vermont legislators are holding up the labeling bill and refusing to take a vote.

What happened to the formerly staunch legislative champions of Vermont’s “right to know” bill? They lost their nerve and abandoned their principles after Monsanto representative recently threatened a public official that the biotech giant would sue Vermont if they dared to pass the bill....
