Almost Half of Detroit Unable to Read, “Functionally Illiterate”

Posted on May 07, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: RT News

A study by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund found that 47 percent of adults in the city are ‘functionally illiterate’.

‘Functionally illiterate’ means they struggle with day-to-day tasks, like reading job applications, following a bus schedule or understanding product labels.

Those deemed illiterate however have been educated. The report indicated that the same group found to be ‘functionally illiterate’ had completed elementary education, where reading is taught and half of the group had either a high school diploma or a GED.

Nearly half of the city’s population lacks the necessary skills to work in even the most entry level and remedial jobs.

Increasing adult educational attainment is critical to connecting the one in two city residents who are currently unemployed and underemployed to good jobs in our new economy,” said Karen Tyler-Ruiz, director of the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund. “This is a critical opportunity for Detroit, where we know that access to services to improve basic skills like reading and math are extremely limited in and around the city.”

Detroit however is not Michigan’s only problem spot....

Imam: Obama Will Soon Hang, “Dogs should not rejoice too much for killing lions…”

Posted on May 03, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Ynet News

An imam from the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem vowed to take revenge over “the western dogs” for killing Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on Sunday.

In a Youtube video uploaded by the imam he said: “The western dogs are rejoicing after killing one of our Islamic lions. From Al-Aqsa Mosque, where the future caliphate will originate with the help of God, we say to them – the dogs will not rejoice too much for killing the lions. The dogs will remain dogs and the lion, even if he is dead, will remain a lion.”

The imam then verbally attacked US President Barack Obama saying: “You personally instructed to kill Muslims. You should know that soon you’ll hang together with Bush Junior.”

“We are a nation of billions, a good nation. We’ll teach you about politics and military ways very soon, with god’s help,” he vowed.

Some two dozen Palestinians gathered in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday to pay tribute to slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.  About 25 people holding pictures and posters of bin Laden rallied outside a Gaza City university....

McDonalds Hires 62k Part-Time Workers, Turns Away Almost One Million Others in One Day

Posted on Apr 28, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Zero Hedge

This is what the US economy has been reduced to: McDonalds reports that as part of its employment event to hire 50,000 minimum wage, (mostly) part-time workers, subsequently raised to 62,000 it received a whopping 1 million applications, or a Tim Geithner jealousy inducing 6.2% hit rate (h/t X. Kurt. OSis).  Alas, the US economy is now so pathetic that the bulk of the population will settle for anything. Literally anything. And the saddest part: over 938,000 applicants were turned away. Here’s hoping to Burger King needs a few million janitors in the immediate future too. And yes, aside from reality, things in America are really recovering quite nicely.

From Bloomberg:

McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.

The April 19 national hiring day was the company’s first, said Danya Proud, a McDonald’s spokeswoman. She declined to disclose how many of the jobs were full- versus part-time.

Russia Warns Over New UN Resolution on Libya, Has UN Veto Power

Posted on Apr 26, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Reuters

Russia said on Tuesday it will not support any United Nations Security Council resolutions on Libya which could escalate the conflict in the North African nation, local news agencies reported.

“If a resolution leads to a further escalation of a civil war by any means, including outside intervention, we will not be able to support this,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

Russia, a veto-wielding permanent U.N. Security Council member, abstained last month from the vote on a resolution authorizing force to protect civilians in Libya by enforcing a no-fly zone.

But Russia’s leaders have repeatedly criticized the extent of the coalition operation.

Initially, leaders of the NATO Western military alliance had ruled out sending ground troops to Libya, but EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said last week the bloc’s members would consider such a step if the U.N. requested it....

Israeli Car Ad Suggests Running Over Palestinian Children in Your New Subaru

Posted on Apr 21, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

"We'll see who can stand against you." reads the Hebrew above the logo.

A new car ad in Israel has drawn considerable outrage for its implied promotion of running over Palestinian kids.

The commercial advertisement, published by a Subaru dealership in Israel, features the scene photographed last year when an Israeli settler struck two Palestinian children with his car in the East al-Quds (Jerusalem) neighborhood of Silwan before speeding away, Xinhua reported on Thursday.

“We’ll see who can stand against you,” reads the Hebrew line to the right corner of the picture.

Hayden’s Note:

Is that correct?  Can anyone translate?

The October incident targeted two youngsters, aged 10 and 12, breaking the younger victim’s leg.

The acting Palestinian Authority (PA) Chief Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party has said the promotion of the act of aggression “is a dirty advertisement and propaganda that reached to the status of calling for [the] killing Palestinian children by running them over.”

The attacker, named David Be’eri, is the director-general of Elad, a hard-line real estate development conglomerate. ...

Deadly Tornado Outbreak Among Largest in US History

Posted on Apr 18, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: LA Times

One of the largest convulsions of tornado activity in U.S. history left a swath of death and debris from Oklahoma to North Carolina and Virginia, killing at least 44 people, disrupting power service for thousands, and leaving many others injured or huddled in shelters. The three-day outbreak included 241 tornadoes reported over 14 states, according to, noting that the spate of twisters is likely to rank among the most active ever recorded.

And more vicious weather is moving in.

By Sunday morning, the National Weather Service had declared that the severe thunderstorms were gone, but the respite could be short-lived. Meteorologists said another storm system would probably plague the central and southern Plains early this week and move east, possibly striking some of the same areas....

Japanese Commission: Nuclear Crisis as Bad as Chernobyl, Raises Disaster Rating

Posted on Apr 12, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Forbes

The Japanese Nuclear Safety Commission (JNSC) has decided to raise the threat level posed by the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi (FDI) nuclear power plant to equal the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl, according to the state-run television network, NHK.

Previously, the commission held that the amount of radiation released from FDI warranted only a level 5 designation on the International Nuclear Event Scale (which runs from 1 to 7). The 1979 U.S. meltdown at Three Mile Island is also rated a five.

Although the commission believes the total amount of radioactive material released into the environment in Japan is less than what was released from Chernobyl, it now considers the amount sufficient to warrant the highest possible designation because of two additional factors.

Radiation Risks in Europe No Longer “Negligible” – American West Coast Even Worse

Posted on Apr 11, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: EurActiv

The risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer “negligible,” according to CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity. The NGO is advising pregnant women and infants against “risky behaviour,” such as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large leaves.

In response to thousands of inquiries from citizens concerned about fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Europe, CRIIRAD has compiled an information package on the risks of radioactive iodine-131 contamination in Europe.

The document, published on 7 April, advises against consuming rainwater and says vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid consuming vegetables with large leaves, fresh milk and creamy cheese.

The risks related to prolonged contamination among vulnerable groups of the population can no longer be considered “negligible” and it is now necessary to avoid “risky behaviour,” CRIIRAD claimed.

However, the institute underlines that there is absolutely no need to lock oneself indoors or take iodine tablets.

CRIIRAD says its information note is not limited to the situation in France and is applicable to other European countries, as the level of air contamination is currently the same in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, for instance....

Japan Seawater Radioactivity Surpasses 7.5 Million x Legal Limit

Posted on Apr 05, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Business Insider

A fish was caught on Friday midway between Fukushima and Tokyo that contained dangerously high levels of radioactive iodine and high levels of cesium.

This catch has prompted Japan to announce its first legal limits for radiation in fish, according to the AP. Previously Japan had said it was enough to ban fishing in the near proximity of the nuclear plant.

Japan also just announced a huge surge in ocean contamination, as radioactive iodine-131 at 7.5 million times the legal limit was found near the plant, according to Japan Times. Yesterday, levels were only 5 million times the legal limit.

Ocean contamination will probably get worse. Yesterday TEPCO commenced a plan to dump 11,500 tons of radioactive water into the ocean, and it said a leak of even more toxic water could last for months.

Japan, like the Gulf of Mexico during the oil spill, faces a serious economic blow if its fishing industry dries up.

Israel Breaks Demolition Record, Accused of Apartheid

Posted on Apr 04, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Press TV

The United Nations has warned that the demolition of the Palestinian residences by Israelis has been breaking the record for the past three months. “The number of Palestinian buildings in the West Bank demolished by the Israeli authorities has hit a record high for the third consecutive month,” said Chris Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees on Sunday, AFP reported.

“The number of people forcibly displaced by these demolitions has also hit a record monthly high with 158 people forcibly displaced in March by demolitions, including 64 children,” he said.

The official said respectively 29, 70 and 76 homes had been razed to the ground each month since January.

The policy clearly aims at “discrimination against one ethnic group,” Gunness noted.

Tel Aviv is accused of implementing an apartheid system, under which it indulges Jews while withholding basic requirements from the Palestinians.

The destructions have been carried out coincidental with Israel’s building of illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem). Tel Aviv occupied the two Palestinian territories in 1967 and later annexed them, in a move not recognized by the international community....

Libyan “Rebels” Have Already Set Up a Central Bank and Oil Company

Posted on Mar 29, 2011 in Federal Reserve & Bankers, Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Economic Collapse Blog

The rebels in Libya are in the middle of a life or death civil war and Moammar Gadhafi is still in power and yet somehow the Libyan rebels have had enough time to establish a new Central Bank of Libya and form a new national oil company.  Perhaps when this conflict is over those rebels can become time management consultants.  They sure do get a lot done.  What a skilled bunch of rebels – they can fight a war during the day and draw up a new central bank and a new national oil company at night without any outside help whatsoever.

If only the rest of us were so versatile!  But isn’t forming a central bank something that could be done after the civil war is over?  According to Bloomberg, the Transitional National Council has “designated the Central Bank of Benghazi as a monetary authority competent in monetary policies in Libya and the appointment of a governor to the Central Bank of Libya, with a temporary headquarters in Benghazi.”  Apparently someone felt that it was very important to get pesky matters such as control of the banks and control of the money supply out of the way even before a new government is formed....

Syria and Yemen: Tying up Globalist Loose Ends

Posted on Mar 23, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Source: Activist Post

Once again, “claims” and “allegations” herald broader western meddling in the Middle East under the guise of the suspiciously ubiquitous “Arab Spring.” As the global corporate-financier oligarchy directs US, British, and French planes to bomb yet another Arab nation, their media tentacles are searching for sensationalism and sympathy in Syria to bolster destabilization efforts on the ground. Indeed the “Otpor fist” that heralded unrest from Tunisia to Egypt is now being “raised” in Syria.

In a recent TIME magazine article titled, “Arab Spring: Is a Revolution Starting Up in Syria?,” it cites “descriptions” of protests, “claims” of government brutality, and “alleged details” of protesters rising up against the Syrian government, long slated for removal by the global corporate-financier oligarchs.

Yemen as well, cited as an example of Western hypocrisy for not garnering it’s own UN “no-fly zone” in reality doesn’t need one, as the British created and managed Muslim Brotherhood and elements within the Yemeni army are already on their way to ousting President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Mohammed Qahtan, Yemen’s Al-Islah (Muslim Brotherhood) leader, is leading the calls to oust Saleh from power, not “the people of Yemen.” In a March 23, 2011 Reuters report, Qahtan was quoted as warning Saleh, “We will arrive where you are and we will remove you.” In the same report, the US gives yet another shocking display of feigned surprise over the Middle East upheaval, voicing concerns that Saleh’s ouster would be a blow to their fight against “Al Qaeda.” As we will soon see, such upheaval has been in the works for 20 years, and this dishonesty now being portrayed since the unrest began in Tunisia is yet another look into the bottomless well of depravity from which our “leadership” reigns....

Update on Japan: Radiation, Problems and Information Blackout

Posted on Mar 21, 2011 in Global & National News – Kevin Hayden

Here are a variety of headlines and excerpts from some of my more trusted sources regarding the situation in Japan –

Fukushima update: Emergency evacuation of workers ordered after Reactor No. 3 emits grayish smoke
Releases of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plant are “now significant and continuing” said Andre-Claude Lacoste, said the head of France’s Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN).
A “grayish smoke” cloud was observed coming from the roof of Reactor No. 3, causing an evacuation of all the workers there while Japanese authorities figure out if it’s safe to return the workers to the site. It was called an “alarming setback” and provides further evidence of a worsening problem with Reactor No.

Japan Getting Desperate, “Will Reach Critical Stage” Shortly, Using Fire Hoses to Cool Reactors

Posted on Mar 16, 2011 in Global & National News

Source: Reuters

Japan’s nuclear crisis appeared to be spinning out of control on Wednesday after workers withdrew briefly from a stricken power plant because of surging radiation levels and a helicopter failed to drop water on the most troubled reactor.

In a sign of desperation, police will try to cool spent nuclear fuel at one of the facility’s reactors with water cannons, normally used to quell riots.

If cooling operations do not proceed well, the situation will “reach a critical stage in a couple of days”, said an official with the government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

A stream of gloomy warnings and reports on the Japan crisis from experts and officials around the world triggered something of a meltdown in U.S. markets on Wednesday, with the Japanese yen surging to a record high against the dollar and all three major stock indexes slumping on fears of slower worldwide growth. European markets fared similarly.

Traders were glued to their screens, hitting the sell button every time officials gave ever bleaker assessments of the situation on the ground in Japan.
