Kenneth Wright does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe a SWAT team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. “I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers,” Wright said.
Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as a SWAT team breached his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn. “He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,” Wright said.
According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children ages 3, 7, and 11 and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.
As it turned out, law enforcement were there looking for Wright’s estranged wife.
“They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids,” Wright said. Wright said he later went to the mayor and Stockton Police Department, but the City of Stockton had nothing to do with Wright’s search warrant.
The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the SWAT for his wife’s defaulted student loans.
According to the Department of Education’s Office of the Inspector General, the case can’t be discussed publicly until it is closed, but a spokesperson did confirm that the department did execute the search warrant at Wright’s home.
Hayden’s Note:
I noted long ago that I had a severe problem with the Department of Education’s purchase of new Remington 870 Police Shotguns. These are 14″ inch-barreled “entry guns” for SWAT teams, complete with Wilson combat sights. I received quite a bit of flack from readers and commenters regarding the Office of the Inspector General and their need for these weapons.
I was a police officer. I participated in numerous search warrants and home entries. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe that an armored SWAT team is needed for the apprehension of a female student-loan debtor. And even if she was being accused of additional criminal charges, such as financial fraud, theft or what have you… in what perverse universe requires a SWAT team to kick in her door – especially when she doesn’t even live there? I’ve made entry into enough houses to know that any warrant could be your last, but really?
15 Federal SWAT operators? Give me a break. Two suited investigators could have knocked on the door, requested to speak to her or served the search warrant. But ohh, hell no. We’ve gotta use all that Homeland Security funding and bring an armored vehicle, a small platoon of kevlar-clad jack-booted thugs and a door breacher. Geeez. What nonsense.
And in case you’re a bit confused as to the background here –
In 2010, the US Federal Government took control of just about all of the student loan debt in America. At that time, I warned friends and readers that this was a dangerous move. By switching private loans into the hands of the Federal government, what else could we expect? Granted, I never thought it would become this severe! But… go read the previous article from last year regarding the Department of Education’s purchase of new weapons and my thoughts on that. At the time, I figured it would be for investigations of fraud and embezzlement within the Department itself, perhaps joint investigations with additional Federal agencies and other valid law enforcement reasons. I pondered the idea of the DoE enforcing anti-homeschooling laws or guarding public schools. But … instead, they are used for kicking in the door of a student loan debtor. Congrats, America. You’ve at a new low.
Hayden’s Update:
The Office of the Inspector General stated that they could not discuss details of the case publicly. Once this story started to circulate, suddenly, they have decided to offer information. The OIG advised News 10 that they did not serve the warrant in connection with any student loans. However, the original footage from News 10 spoke of this topic, along with Kenneth Wright’s own testimony and statements regarding the entire incident, and stated that he was informed the warrant was related to student debt. I have witnessed several sites being scrubbed over the last several hours, stories being recanted and facts changed. Disinformation is everywhere, so do your own due diligence. I merely present the under-reported news and offer my opinion sometimes.
Hayden’s Update II:
Here’s the video from News 10. I’d really like to know the exact probable cause and supposed charges stated on the affidavit.

I’m lost here, where in your source article did it mentioned that the estranged wife only had outstanding student debt and was NOT involved in fraud or embezzlement? Either way I find this use of force to be disturbing but I found your heading to be misleading. Lets straighten out the facts and please correct me if I missed it. Thanks.
Well, the original source material has now been taken down. On the original News 10 website and article, they had a video segment of their news broadcast that showed multiple pages of the warrant and talked about the reasoning behind the warrant service.
Funny how it’s been taken down now. I started to download it myself so that I could keep a copy, but I’m at work and couldn’t rip it.
Do a search on YouTube for the original video.
And even if she DID have additional charges, citing student loan repayment as one of them is the entire point. The headline is not misleading, one bit. A Dept of Education SWAT team breached a door at 6am, citing failure to repay student loan debt.
What’s misleading about that?

I found it misleading because when I followed your source link it made no mention of anything about student loan repayment thus the disconnection with your headline. As you noted, your basis for that has now been removed so I think you can understand my confusion with the lack of info available for backup. I will do a youtube search as suggested. Sorry I am just the type of person that tries to obtain facts and read source material when reading blogs such as yours. Usually you are right on though. Thanks for the response.
Not a problem. I did not mean for my response to come across so crass and unpolished. I get a lot of comments from “anonymous” users that fail to read the entire story, let alone check source material and links.
Your compliment is appreciated and your effort to find Truth even moreso.
Cheers,
Hayden
PS – I’m still at work… were you able to locate an additional source for the news segment on YouTube? (Firewall is blocking me at the moment.)
It looks like the original link is gone. No such page. But Check out this search i did on their page http://search.news10.net/default.aspx?ct=r&q=department%20of%20education%20swat
