This cozy, little 150 square foot home away from home is the perfect weekend cabin.  Built for a Finnish family that live nearby, it offers an escape from the norm.  With ample seating that converts to a large bed, you could sleep up to 4 people, if needed.  And while the ceilings are not that tall, it does offer quite a bit of storage in large, deep drawers, along with overhead shelves and lofted nooks.

The kitchen is truly the focal point in this design, with large windows that allow a cascade of sunshine to fill the little space.  With only the truly required necessities, such as a 2-burner gas stove, small sink, and pantry, this kitchen can provide ample space for food prep, work projects, or a spot for your laptop.

A small wood burning stove completes the basics and provides for a warm and intimate night.  Or simply use it to take the chill off after you return from outside.  As you’ll notice, there is no bathroom or shower inside.

(Outdoor showers can be a thing of luxury, as well.  ...

Like so many generations before, it was my father who first taught me about tools as I was growing up.  The names of the tools, their uses, how to properly care for them, and what not to do so I could avoid injury were all part of the lessons he ingrained in me.  Early in my adult life, I spent eight years in the military repairing fixed-wing jet aircraft and later, helicopters.  After my time in service was over, I spent several years working in the emergency services sector, including wild land fire fighting and emergency management.  Tools have been a big part of my ability to earn a living and play a vital role in my prepping, my ability to rebuild infrastructure after a disaster, gardening, and homesteading.

Hayden’s Note:

I talk many times on TruthisTreason.net about investing in tangibles for both wealth protection and bartering.  Quality tools are an integral part of those “tangibles.”  Read on to learn which ones you need!

Risk Assessment: Disaster Game Affirms Greed of Humans, Even When Faced with Extermination

Masters of Disaster

Howard Kunreuther and Robert Meyer have staked their careers on the belief that human beings are at heart, irrational and doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over—unless we find a way to overcome our wiring.

But even they have been surprised by the results of Quake. (Hayden’s Note: No, not the First Person Shooter game called ‘Quake’ … I thought they meant that, too!)

Quake is a computer simulation that Meyer, the Gayfryd Steinberg Professor and co-director with Kunreuther of Wharton’s Risk Management and Decision Processes Center, helped design to test certain ideas about how humans perceive “risk.” Quake is very easy to play, but, as it turns out, very difficult to win—though not because the mechanics of the game are all that tricky.

Rather, it’s our brains that make it difficult.

It works like this: Quake players are presented with a little icon of a house on a map of a hypothetical country. They also get a pot of digital cash—$20,000....

As if pulled from a post-apocalyptic movie, this underground nuclear missile silo was once a cavernous, empty concrete relic from decades past.  But one man saw the potential in it, and decided to build the ultimate dream home for himself.

The decommissioned nuclear base offers up 20,000 square feet for furnishings, although Ed Peden and his family use only 1/3 of that space.  Mr. Peden was able to purchase the former military base for a paltry $48,000 – about $0.50 per square foot! – and commenced to remodeling the place.  Located just 25 miles outside of Topeka, Kansas, he and his wife Dianna were the first people to turn one of these Cold War doomsday bunkers into a livable home, and they now run a business helping others to do the same. It cost Uncle Sam $4 million to build this place; Ed paid 1/100th of that. But it did need a bit of work.

“The gunk I hauled out of here in wheelbarrows was incredible,” Ed tells us....

Are Oats Healthy? A Primal Opinion on the Good and Bad

You know how we say that grains exist on a spectrum of suitability, from “really bad” wheat to “not so terrible” rice? They may be the most commonly consumed (and thus encountered) grains, but wheat and rice aren’t the only grains on the spectrum. Well, what about the rest of ‘em?  Since I get a lot of email about oats, I figured they were a good choice for this post.

Besides – though I was (and still mostly am) content to toss the lot of them on the “do not eat” pile, I think we’re better served by more nuanced positions regarding grains. Hence, my rice post. Hence, my post on traditionally prepared grains. And hence, today’s post on oats. Not everyone can avoid all grains at all times, and not everyone wants to avoid all grains at all times. For those situations, it makes sense to have a game plan, a way to “rank” foods.

Today, we’ll go over the various incarnations of the oat, along with any potential nutritional upsides or downsides....

New Madrid Zone Lets Out a 4.0 Earthquake, Felt in 13 States

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck early Tuesday in the southeast corner of Missouri, waking up residents in as many as 13 surrounding states, according to the USGS.

The New Madrid zone stretches some 150 miles through five states. The potential impact is larger, however, including the states of Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi.

A February 7th, 1812 quake, which seismologists estimate as 7.7 in magnitude, reportedly cracked sidewalks in Washington, D.C., and caused church bells to ring as far away as Boston and Toronto.

Nick Rosen set off around the world in search of people living off-grid in order to document the lifestyle and try to get a better understanding of why people jump ship and embrace “less stuff,” more nature, and true freedom.

You’ll hear about Andrea Johnston who searched high and low for the perfect place. She mentions that she loves truck stops and I couldn’t agree more! Everything is 12 volt, offers hardware, tools, coffee, fuel and most even rent movies!

Or perhaps the former Vice President of Urban Outfitters…? She got out of the rat race in order to reconnect with her love and enjoy life.

Nick discovers off-grid residents of beaches, the mountains, even an off-grid millionaire who understands the fragility and intricacies of our modern “power grid.”

Whether your goal is more freedom, organic and sustainable farming, alternative architecture or merely finding your escape route from the daily grind, off-grid living is quickly becoming the best new thing among a wide variety of people across the globe!

The video is a bit “environmentalist-leaning” but being off the grid doesn’t mean you have to be some hippie woodsman.  ...

For years, I’ve been involved in various circles of organic gardening, local produce, food co-ops, alternative architecture, and local currencies.  It’s been a passion of mine for quite some time.  In 2008, as I was campaigning for Ron Paul’s Presidential bid, I stumbled across a small website that was offering an experiment in alternative housing, garden co-ops, and liberty-oriented living.  What does that mean, you ask?  I wondered the same thing and looked into it more.

At first, I expected this to be some crazy commune idea and I instantly conjured up images of people living in run-down RVs, huts, and wearing lots of tie-dye.  While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not my idea of an ideal neighborhood or living experiment.  But their website was geared towards liberty lovers and self-reliant people in west Texas, so it couldn’t be too bad.

A brief excerpt:

The process involves forming a co-op of people buying “shares” in the community and these people would be granted land use at a minimum of 1 acre per share, for as long as they homesteaded the land.

Monsanto’s Bt Corn on the Cob to Be Sold at Wal-Mart With No Indication It’s Genetically Modified

Most of the genetically-modified (GM) corn products forced on American consumers today are hidden in processed foods in the form of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), corn oil, corn starch, and various other corn-based additives.

But soon to be available at a Walmart near you is Monsanto’s Bt sweet corn, the agri-giant’s first ever GM corn product made available to consumers as whole ears right on the cob in the produce section– and like with all other GMOs, neither Walmart nor Monsanto has any intention of labeling this new “Frankencorn.”

Hayden’s Note:

I urge you to research the dangers of genetically modified foods. I have written countless articles on the topic.  With that being said, this move will further obfuscate and confuse consumers regarding the severity of GMOs.  For those few people out there who buy corn from the produce section in order to avoid BPA exposure from cans, or perhaps believe that the corn is better for you as a raw, unprocessed “produce item,” you’re in for a world of cancer and they won’t even give you a courtesy warning.  ...

You Can’t Say That on Television: Judge Napolitano Asks the Real Questions, Show Canceled Thereafter

Judge Andrew Napolitano fires a volley of questions, aimed squarely at the Mainstream Media, the Establishment, and those that lack the ability or desire to question their surroundings.  Fox News unceremoniously canceled his show and he has now been endorsed by Ron Paul as his Vice President.

This is a call to wake those who still believe there is a difference between the so-called Left and Right.  Democrats and Republicans, Liberals and Conservatives: they are one in the same when it comes to Washington, with only minor, petty differences so that you feel as though you have a viable argument in supporting the platforms and actions of those who represent it. Secondly, Michael Scheuer and the Judge lay down heavy artillery on the fact that members of Congress are bought by Israel.

Consequences to Expect if the US Invades Iran

Let’s be honest, quite a few Americans love a good war, especially those Americans who have never had to bear witness to one first hand.  War is the ultimate tribally vicarious experience.  Anyone, even pudgy armchair generals with deep-seated feelings of personal inadequacy, can revel in the victories and actions of armies a half a world away as if they themselves stood on the front lines risking possible annihilation at the hands of dastardly cartoon-land “evil doers”.  They may have never done a single worthwhile thing in their lives, but at least they can bask in the perceived glory of their country’s military might.

This attitude of swollen ego through proxy is not limited to the “Right” side of the political spectrum as some might expect.  In fact, if the terrifyingly demented presidency of Barack Obama has proven anything so far, it is that elements of the “Left” are just as bloodthirsty as any NeoCon, and just as ready to blindly support the political supremacy of their “side” regardless of any broken promises, abandoned principles, or openly flaunted hypocrisies....

It is estimated that over 400 US troops marched in formation to the White House in order to show solidarity and support for Presidential Candidate Ron Paul.  The formation then turned its back on the White House and held a salute for as many seconds as there has been military suicides under President Obama.

When it comes to campaign donations, Ron Paul receives more donations from the military than all other Republican candidates combined.

The march, Veterans for Ron Paul, was organized by former Marine veterans Adam Kokesh and Nathan Cox.

Social Experiment: World-Renowned Violinist Plays DC Subway – Does Anyone Stop & Listen?

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 in Blog, Editorials, & Thoughts

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net – Video Included

A man stood at a Metro station in Washington DC playing the violin. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, it was calculated that 1,100 people went through the station, most of whom were on their way to work.

Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried along.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly, he was late for work.

During the entire 45 minutes, only 6 people stopped and stayed for any length of time. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk. He collected a paltry $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed.  No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

The violinist was Joshua Bell, considered to be one of the best musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, on a Stradivarius violin worth $3.5 million dollars....

New GMO Research: Glyphosate and RoundUp Induce Kidney Cell Death at 50ppm

Disturbing new research published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology indicates that genetically modified (GM) crops with “stacked traits”  — that is, with multiple traits such as glyphosate-herbicide resistance and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal toxins engineered together into the same plant, are likely far more dangerous to human health than previously believed, due to their synergistic toxicity.
In this latest study, the glyphosate-containing herbicide Roundup was tested on human embryonic kidney cells at concentrations between 1 to 20,000 parts per million (ppm). It was found that concentrations as low as 50 ppm per million, which the authors noted were “far below agricultural dilutions,” induced cell death, with the 50% of the cells dying at 57.5 ppm.
Resistance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, has been engineered into many GM plants, so that fields can be sprayed indiscriminately with herbicide without destroying the crops. While the GM glyphosate-resistant plants survive, they subsequently contain residues of glyphosate and its various metabolites (e.g. aminomethylphosphonic acid) that present a significant health threat to the public....
