Water Treatment Basics

Water found in natural sources often contains impurities, chemicals, and living organisms and is treated to remove them using several methods, (often in combination) to make the water safe for human consumption.  This paper attempts to describe (at a very high level) some of the more common issues concerning water treatment.  Specific attention is paid to water filtration which is an important subset of water treatment methods.

Sediments:    Sediments are simply solid particles.  When they are suspended in water they affect the clarity of the water and this is called turbidity.    Typically when sedimentation is discussed it is considered to be inert and harmless, like sand (although that may not be the case).

A common pre-filtering technique used for larger particulates is simply to keep the water as still as possible and let gravity do its thing.   Once the larger particles have settled to the bottom, the water at the top is taken out and fed into a filter system.

Filters improve water clarity by removing the remaining solid particles.

Kicking off Labor Day weekend last Friday was a report by the Labor Department that, on balance, the U.S. economy failed to create a single job in August.  On the bright side, this also means not a single job was lost in August either.  Unfortunately, a zero reading is actually a negative reading…125,000 jobs a month are generally needed just to keep up with population growth.

Somehow the unemployment rate stayed at 9.1 percent.  However, it is really much higher.  There are 14 million people that are officially unemployed.  But there are also 11.4 million others that are unofficially unemployed....

When it comes to gold, one can now officially skip the foreplay.

Gold has proceeded to rise to within nickels of the all time high, with spot trading over $1910 at last check.  Since Europe is about to open shortly, and since the free fall in risk will resume now that virtually every rhetorical gimmick has been used and abused ad inf, it appears that absent the CME doing away with margin requirements altogether, we will see $2,000 spot within hours.

Near-Earth Threats, NASA and Elenin – a Civilized Analysis

Kevin Hayden –

Recently, there has been quite a bit of talk about a comet or celestial body named Elenin (or C/2010x) that has entered our solar system and will be making a close pass of the Earth soon.  At first, I assumed it was simply the talk of fanciful amateur astronomers and that, at most, it might offer an interesting night-sight for Earth’s inhabitants, much like Haley’s Comet and many others.

But as I continued hearing more and more about this “Elenin object,” I started to realize this was no mere comet.  And perhaps, just maybe, it could have something to do with the famed Planet-X first reported about back in 1983 by the Washington Post.  Unfortunately, it seemed as though most of what I could find was wild speculation and fanatical rantings about the end of the world.  I had discovered only a handful of articles that offered any sort of rational information.  It seemed as though the only thing everyone could agree on is the fact that an object is approaching planet Earth but there are dozens of different theories regarding trajectories, size and just how close it will come.  ...

50-Foot Waves from New Zealand Hit California Coast

romo_wedge.jpg.scaled.500Massive waves slamming into California’s coast – killing at least one person and causing millions of dollars in damage – are being labelled the “New Zealand surf” because of where they are coming from.In a rare event, a big weather system between New Zealand and Antarctica has generated a heavy Pacific wide swell, bringing the waves to California.Sean Collins, chief forecaster and president of Surfline, told news website he warned Californian authorities over the swell.“Extra caution is urged to keep the public aware and safe from these large waves and associated rip currents.”

He said it was one of the biggest swells to hit with some waves coming ashore at six to seven metres.

Collins said southern hemisphere storms routinely produced waves in California, but this latest one was in the top 10 percent of known waves.

The US National Weather Service has warned beachgoers were urged to swim only near lifeguard towers – or to stay on the sand.

“Have a good time watching the waves but stay out of the water if you’re not experienced,” National Weather Service forecaster Eric Boldt said.

Few people realize how secretive the Federal Reserve operates even though it is the central bank to our financial system and wields a sword strong enough to be called Excalibur.  The Federal Reserve came about from a secretive meeting on Jekyll Island by some of the world’s top financiers back in 1910 including the powerful J.P. Morgan.  What very few know is that in November of 2010, Ben Bernanke made a trip to the island off of Georgia to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the original meeting.

The US Debt in Easy to Understand Numbers, Ratios and Pictures

I was listening to Dave Ramsey on the radio this afternoon, and he made an excellent point regarding the national debt.

If you don’t know who he is, I encourage you to check out his AM radio show.  He is essentially a debt-advice sorta guy and makes a lot of really good, commonsense recommendations in order for average Americans to find financial peace.  Typically, someone calls in and offers their problem; how much they owe in debt, their household income and spending levels, etc.  His website describes him as, “the host of a nationally syndicated radio program discussing personal finance topics. Strongly emphasizes reducing, avoiding, and eliminating debt.”

Well, Mr. Ramsey crunched some numbers that reflect the US national debt, reduced it by ratios, and attacked it in the same manner as he does his usual callers with debt problems.

He determined that the United States could be compared to someone making $58,000 a year, but spends $75,000 and has over $325,000 in credit card debt.

The latest “answer” to the federal deficit and the much-ado about nothing “spending cuts” equal that same $58,000 earner cutting his spending down to $72,000 per year and cheering about it....

Kevin Hayden - Source: SHTF Plan by Mac Slavo Economist Bob Chapman, of The International Forecaster, has long advocated precious metals as one of the few wealth preservation assets against a wave of destruction that will wipe out everything from stocks, to bonds, to the US dollar itself. In his latest interview with the Corbett Report, Chapman shares his views on what to expect over the next several months: The Federal Reserve knows that they can’t solve the problem. They have instructions to carry this thing out as far as they can, or until the powers behind government decide to pull the plug, so to speak. … One of the things you have to notice here, and this is pure psychological warfare, and if you’re not trained in it you don’t know what these people are up to…I was trained in it…Whenever you see an attack on silver and then gold the way it was you know that there’s going to be some dreadful things going up. Battle in the Desert – Govt Forces Numerous Homeowners Off Their Lands

Just because you hold the deed to a piece of land doesn’t mean that you own it.  These days, we are faced with an ever- increasing presence and implementation of the United Nations Agenda 21 plan and eminent domain laws.  If you become a political target on any number of levels, various tax laws can be used against you in order to strip you of your real estate, your homestead and your dreams.  Nuisance laws and municipal code enforcement can penalize you to the point of bankruptcy or forfeiture of your house.

Something so basic as private property laws have become a playground for government lawyers and aspiring politicians, where they perverse the common definitions and commit blatant theft in the name of “beautification projects,” new highways, strip malls and to appease some arbitrary, obscure law.

Just because something is written into legislation doesn’t mean that it’s legal, moral, ethical or Constitutional.  Hopefully people will begin to get angry enough to start doing something about this.  Perhaps it will take another Ruby Ridge for this topic to be brought back into the mainstream.  ...

US Marshal’s Tactical Operations Plan for the Assault of Ed and Elaine Brown’s Home

Kevin Hayden –

This is the United States Marshal Service’s Operations order that shows the extent that the Federal Government was planning for a violent assault on the home of Ed and Elaine Brown in Plainfield, NH in May of 2007.  It details the initial plan used by the Special Operations Group and part of the intelligence they had prior to launching the operation and SWAT teams that would be used to swiftly and violently take down Ed and Elaine Brown.

Fortunately for Ed and Elaine, Daniel Riley stumbled upon the clandestine teams in the woods on the property early in the morning of June 7th while walking the dog and foiled their plan.  He was beaten, tasered and detained for nearly 8 hours for his misfortune and mistake of wrecking the operation.

The Feds went back to the drawing board after the Browns were alerted of the hidden teams and instead, utilized undercover agents posing as supporters in order to gain access to the house, gain intelligence and finally disarm and arrest Ed Brown.  Many supporters who were at the house or had visited to offer help were arrested.  ...

Bridget, the “lemon lady,” has responded and left a comment below.  It appears that the Feds were going to get this lemon tree, one way or another and threatened her with a potential SWAT raid ifshe did not comply.  Food Police thuggery at its finest.

A Wisconsin woman says she’s more than a little sour now that the U.S. government has forced her to turn over her lemon tree on the grounds that it could spread disease.

Bridget Donovan bought the tree online for $70 nearly three years ago and planted it in the yard of her Waukesha home, where she and her niece nurtured it, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

It grew and yielded lemons and seemed to be healthy.

Then she got a letter from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Unfortunately, Meyer Lemon Tree (the seller) shipped your tree in violation of multiple quarantine laws enacted to prevent the spread of harmful plant diseases and pests,” the letter stated.

The Journal Sentinel said the tree had come from Florida, under quarantine at the time of the purchase because of diseases, and the government tracked where nursery stock had been shipped....

Workers Comp for Babysitters and 20 Other Reasons Why California is Stupid

Posted on Sep 02, 2011 in Economic News

Source: The American Dream

Is there any other state that is as stupid as California?  Unemployment in California has been sitting at about 12 percent for an extended period of time, and yet they continue to push businesses out of the state by imposing thousands of ridiculous regulations on them and by taxing them into oblivion.

Now California is even requiring workers comp for babysitters and paid vacation for nannies.  How insane is that?  The state government in Sacramento is flat broke and drowning in debt and yet they continue to spend gobs of money on some of the most frivolous things imaginable.

Poverty and crime are everywhere, yet California continues to pass legislation that encourages even more illegal immigrants to come in.  Unless you have a really, really good reason to stay in the state, it seems rather stupid to stay in California at this point.  The economy is in shambles, home prices continue to fall, traffic is worse than ever, crime is rising and poverty is everywhere.  Meanwhile, entire portions of the state could be leveled by the next big earthquake at any time. ...
