Ron Paul Suggests 10% Flat Tax to Opt-Out of Federal Govt Programs

Congressman Ron Paul suggests a 10% flat “tax” in order to opt-out of all federal programs (and be left alone!). There are many pros and cons to this idea, depending on what side of the political aisle you sit on. Personally, I find it fair. I can keep 90% of my earnings while still “doing my part” to pay for the general government as a citizen. National defense would be covered and the spending spree that the Federal Government enjoys would be dried up. That 10% would fund the daily operations of a limited government.
Those that still want to take part in Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, public education and government loans can pay their normal taxes and remain in the “system.” And as Dr. Paul says in the video, it needn’t cause any extra paperwork or massive bureaucracy – merely a letter stating that you opt out of Federal services. What do you think? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!

That’s all well and fine, but I’ve paid into social security for many years, and would not want to jeopardize that. Why is it that even Ron Paul cannot separate Social Security from the rest of the budget? It has nothing to do with federal spending, or the budget.
I’ve paid into social security for years. I don’t want to lose that, since my retirement accounts have been killed over and over it seems by our economy.
@ Mike Suttles and Easter –
I think you’re misunderstanding Ron Paul’s intention, as well as the core idea.
You’ve paid into the system for years and years. YOU can stay IN the system and still receive your benefits from the rest of the country that would stay enrolled.
Ron Paul is trying to offer an alternative for young people. Social Security will NOT be there for me when I reach 65. I’m 28 now and have been paying for a decade. And for what? 15% of my paycheck has gone to a fund that will be insolvent when I am eligible.
A 10% “opt-out” program for younger people is perfect and creates an alternative. It allows me to invest that hard earned money elsewhere, such as a private 401(k), savings, investments or just spend it as I see fit instead of *hoping* that the Federal Government can manage it for me for the next 37 years!
This is in line with Dr. Paul’s philosophy of offering competing currencies. While a “gold standard” is not feasible in this global market nowadays for a number of reasons – not to mention the manipulation of metals prices (see also JP Morgan’s RICO investigation, Hunt Brothers, etc). But competing currencies can thrive. Local currencies can thrive, right alongside the dollar. AND it creates a hedge against the eventual demise of the US dollar. Several states are trying to write bills for this very thing in order to inusre themselves against a Federal Reserve meltdown.
And the Virginia state lawmakers are concerned enough to pen a lengthy currency bill out of this fear, do you really think Social Security will be intact and functional when I reach maturity in 37 years? This is so that *my* generation has *something* that we can call our own while still affording those, such as yourselves, a way to stay IN the system and receive those benefits you’ve been paying into for decades.
Also, it adheres to a closer form of limited government – which is what we need. It doesn’t allow the Pentagon to spend $780 billion dollars each year. It doesn’t allow for the gross mis-management of excess funds. It would reduce pork-barreled legislation, earmarks, etc etc. The Federal Government has a very limited responsibility and over the years, we have allowed them to step far over that line that the Forefathers set and intended. This day in age, you don’t attack someone with a weapon and go for the heart. You attack the pocketbook and watch the giant topple.

How much worse could us poor people be at managing our own affairs than the communist party has been? If I had kept all the money they took away from me for social security in a mayonnaise jar in the backyard it would have been a more brilliant financial investment strategy than letting the government get there hands on it .
Count me opted out.
SOLIDARNOSC!
This is a no brainer, they can give us our SS $ back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, not in cash, but instead in a retirement account of our choosing. Then put us into the 10 % flat tax. That would be the right thing to do, for once.
Jeff, this is not a no-brainer, as you state.. they can’t give our social security money back because it’s gone already. People like my grandparents have spent it all.
jefferson never said that.

And I quoted him as saying,
“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”
Same thing, Georg Patric. Get over yourself and stop focusing on semantics.

You mean your Grandparents payed in all there lives? And the government spent it all. right? They put that money in there so they could spend it. They didn’t put it there so you could spend it.
Just in case no one realizes..They used the social security like a sluch fund..theyfunds wars and have used it to pay down debt. They are constsanly dipping into it for things it is not intended for. That i why it is not there. Another reason is the lobbyists in Washington have managed to find ways to skim big profits off of it. If the government is involved the charges will be more.
