Experiments performed with a team of nano quadrotors at the GRASP Lab, University of Pennsylvania. Vehicles developed by KMel Robotics.
Hayden’s Note:
This is a must-watch. It’s a short video, but it is astounding. I’ve been following this lab for awhile, watching them progress. These tiny flying machines will be the future of military warfare, surveillance, and eventually, a daily part of our lives. You might as well get used to your new robot overlords now. Hah.

This fits in eerily well with a recent article written by Dr Marc Kleiman about using exactly these kinds of robots for “crowdsourcing” surveillance by citizens.
I actually got an email last night from my local police department asking our local residents and businesses to share information about their own private surveillance cameras to help work together to deter and fight crime. Interesting proposition – could work, or could be awful “Little Brother” add-on.
Here’s the Kleiman article:

I’m not worried about the unmanned skynet terminators coming to life. That’s too science fiction. I’m more worried about the “unmanned” drones which are programed to go from point A, launch a missile, then go back to point B, and then the ones who launched it say “we’re not credible because it was unmanned.” right…
Well, just wait until these are cruising around your neighborhood. Imagine they are all tied wirelessly into the SuperShot sniper detection system (already in use in New Orleans). If a gunshot goes off, these towers can pinpoint the location of the gunshot. These robots could swarm the region transmitting video in a large grid pattern. This COULD be a good thing in catching a potential shooter or robbery, etc, but like everything, the same technology could be used to track and surveil certain people.
I find these small quadrotors extremely interesting. Let’s hope they are used for good instead of miniature Predator Drones.

Hayden
I am sorry but I must profess, screw that technology, we have enough nosey government agencies and see something say somthing morons, we do not need this crap. For christsakes most technology has yet to stop the killing the rapeing the day to day misery most people suffer and yet we connot stop making G-damn toys that track us and will ultimatly kill us if we are not in lock step with our stoopid elected oaficials. But full steam ahead with our borg prison planet.
I can vibe with that. I’m mostly in agreement … these little robots could open to door to things we can’t even imagine to be used against us, the citizens. BUT… I am still really fascinated by them from a science and technology standpoint. It IS truly amazing what we can do nowadays.
Cheers,
Hayden
