The Case for Saving Your Nickels, Literally: Inflation and Metal Debasement

I’ve often mused about how fun it would be to have a time machine and travel back to the early 1960s, and go on a pre-inflation shopping spree. In that era, most used cars were less than $800, and a new-in-the box Colt .45 Automatic sold for $60. In particular, it would be great to go back and get a huge pile of rolls of then-circulating US silver dimes, quarters, and half dollars at face value. (With silver presently around $30 per ounce, the US 90% silver (1964 and earlier) coinage is selling wholesale at 22 times face value–that is $22,000 for a $1,000 face value bag.)

The disappearance of 90% silver coins from circulation in the US in the mid-1960s beautifully illustrated Gresham’s Law: “Bad Money Drives Out Good.” People quickly realized that the debased copper sandwich coins were bogus, so anyone with half a brain saved every pre-’65 (90% silver) coin that they could find. (This resulted in a coin shortage from 1965 to 1967, while the mint frantically played catch up, producing millions of cupronickel “clad” coins....

ITS Tactical: Attack Recognition and the Art of the Ambush

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: ITS TacticalReally great resource, listed in sidebar ->

Now that you have your routes planned out and have a basic knowledge of surveillance detection its time to talk about attack recognition and the ambush.

We are going to continue to focus on your route from home to work and attacks to your vehicle. I want to focus on your vehicle and travels and not worry about avoiding a sucker punch on the street.

Attack recognition is a whole other animal when you talk about self defense (Tony Blauer has excellent information on physical attack recognition and response).

What’s an Ambush?

An ambush is a surprise attack, from a concealed position. It’s used on a moving or temporarily halted enemy to destroy or capture him and his equipment. This definition is taken right from Infantry 101.

Ambushes have been around since the beginning of ancient warfare and are still in use today in modern combat. So long as there’s war, there will be the art of the ambush.

Attack Recognition

When you can recognize an attack you can use your pre-planned tactics to escape the assault....

The Barter Value of Skills

Posted on Apr 27, 2012 in Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Ready Nutrition by Tess Pennington

Recently, we talked about the necessity of learning skills to aid us in a survival situation.  Don’t underestimate the value of those skills for barter.  If the grid goes down, people may be left with no access to medical care, serious gaps in their knowledge or the inability to repair vital items.  If you possess those abilities, your skills will be in high demand.

In the situation of economic collapse, there will be a revival of the barter system.  To barter means to exchange your goods or services for someone else’s goods or services.  To complete a satisfactory barter transaction, each person must desire something from the other party.  Despite the potential of desperation, it’s morally imperative to be fair to the party that is most in need. Remember that one day, that person who is most in need may be you.

Right now, if something breaks, the replacement is only as far away as the closest Wal-Mart.  However, in the event of an economic collapse or a disaster that causes the trucks to stop running, it won’t be easy to replace broken items....

Red Cross on Standby for Chicago Evacuation Due to Civil Unrest, “National Security Incident”

Is there a secret plan to evacuate some residents of Chicago in the event of major trouble during the NATO summit next month? CBS 2 has uncovered some evidence that there is. It comes from the Milwaukee area branch of the American Red Cross.

CBS 2 News has obtained a copy of a Red Cross e-mail sent to volunteers in the Milwaukee area.

It said the NATO summit “may create unrest or another national security incident. The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin has been asked to place a number of shelters on standby in the event of evacuation of Chicago.”

According to a chapter spokesperson, “Our direction has come from the City of Chicago and the Secret Service.”

Hayden’s Note:

Perhaps they are merely covering their bases should something bad occur, but I find it awfully peculiar given the Fed’s dismal track record of preparedness, disaster response, and contingency planning.

Feds and Utilities Argue Over Electromagnetic Pulse Threat Coming in 2014

Posted on Apr 25, 2012 in - NASA / Space Exploration, Emergency Preparedness & Survival

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Business Insider

As scientists warn of an impending solar storm between now and 2014 that could collapse the national power grid, thrusting millions into darkness instantly, a debate has flared up between utilities and the government on the severity of such an event.

NASA and the National Academy of Sciences previously confirmed that an electromagnetic pulse event from an intense solar storm could occur any time between now and 2014.

They say it could have the effect of frying electronics and knocking out transformers in the national electric grid system.

But in February, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which represents the power industry, issued a stunning report asserting that a worst-case geomagnetic “super storm” like the 1859 Carrington event likely wouldn’t damage most power grid transformers. Instead, it would cause voltage instability and possibly result in blackouts lasting only a few hours or days, but not months and years.

Hayden’s Note:

Hah!  Riiiiight.  Keep thinking that.  And good luck.

I strongly believe that our government is aware of an imminent threat coming in the next 24 months and is preparing for it.

Biological Warfare and Its Effects

Hayden’s Note:

Dr. Bones, of Doom and Bloom.net, has graciously contributed this article regarding biological warfare and its repercussions.  I consider Dr. Bones and Nurse Amy to be pioneers in the post-SHTF medical arena, bringing a full spectrum of in-depth and advanced medical knowledge to the average person. Their new book, the Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Handbookwill be reviewed here shortly.

We have spent some time discussing traumatic wounds, thermal burns, and even radiation sickness, all of which are injuries sustained in disaster and doomsday scenarios.  Civil unrest, wildfires, nuclear bombs, and meltdowns are all catastrophes that the preparedness community is concerned about, but let’s talk about about something few consider as a possible cause of SHTF situations: biological warfare.

Biological warfare is the term given to the use of infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or their by-products to wreak death and havoc among a specific population.  As a result, the user achieves control over an area or a segment of the population by weakening the ability to resist.  Biological weapons don’t necessarily have to kill humans: unleashing a horde of locusts to destroy crops or agents that kill livestock can be just as effective....

“There’s always sign.”

Sign is the physical evidence of any disturbance of the environment left behind by animals, humans or objects. The detection of this sign is called sign cutting. A person (or animal) cannot traverse ground without leaving some sort of telltale sign. This sign is what we’re trying to find and track.

When most people think of tracking, they usually think of following footprints. But a trained tracker looks for more. He looks for kicked-over rocks, soil depressions, clothing fibers, changes in vegetation, changes in the environment, ambient noise or lack thereof, etc. Basically, the tracker looks for the disturbance — the sign — left behind by the person or persons being tracked.

Origin

Sign cutting and tracking has been around for millennia. It is a natural extension of hunting, both animals and people. On our continent, Native Americans perfected the art of sign cutting tracking both men and animals. To this day, there are special units of Native American law enforcement trackers protecting this nation....

EMP Attack and Solar Storms: A Guide

An EMP, or Electro Magnetic Pulse, is generated from the detonation of a nuclear device or quite possibly, extreme solar activity, such as that which was experienced in 1859, 1989, and as recent as 1994.  The US Government and military have studied these phenomenon extensively and several reports have been issued regarding EMP effects on vehicles, computer networks, critical infrastructure, and more.  In this report, we’ll cover many of the topics discussed and researched in regards to geomagnetic anomalies, solar storm activity, and the effects of an electromagnetic pulse.  It should be noted, however, that Congress has largely ignored the EMP Commission’s warnings and our hospitals, trucking industry, and critical infrastructure remain highly vulnerable.

In the late summer of 1859, a great solar storm hit the planet. This storm was the product of a coronal mass ejection from the Sun. While the science and physics behind these coronal ejections is interesting, it can also be long winded for some readers so I’ll keep this brief.

Once in a while – exactly when scientists still cannot predict – an event occurs on the surface of the Sun that releases a tremendous amount of energy in the form of a solar flare or a coronal mass ejection, an explosive burst of very hot, electrified gases with a mass that can surpass that of Mount Everest....

For years, the alternative media has warned about the US military being used against the American people in a time of economic collapse or any sort of martial law scenario.

Drills such as Vigilant Guard 2010 have brought widespread attention to the fact that portions of our own military are training to take on crowds of American citizens demanding food and Constitutional rights in a time of crisis.

Now, a new release by the website Public Intelligence, once again confirms that as recently as February and March of 2012, US troops at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington were conducting training scenarios for a civil disturbance domestic quick reaction force.

A series of photos of the drills shows US troops with crowd control riot shields on the opposite side of actors portraying what can only be described as American citizens.

“The following photos are from March and February of this year and were taken at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.  The first four photos from March depict riot control training for a “domestic quick reaction force” that would aid in civil disturbances....

Researchers at one of the world’s leading think tanks have developed a computing model that predicts serious implications for our way of life as a result of our incessant need to consume resources like oil, food, and fresh water. According to a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the breaking point will come no later than 2030, and when it does, we can expect a paradigm shift unlike any we have seen before in human history – one that will not only collapse the economies of the world, but will cause food and energy production to decrease so significantly that it will lead to the deaths of  hundreds of millions of people in the process.

The recent study, completed on behalf of The Club of Rome, an organization which issued it’s own findings on ‘peak everything’ back in the 1970′s in a controversial environmental report dubbed The Limits to Growth (video), takes into account the relations between various global developments and produces computer simulations for alternative scenarios....

One of the fantastic advantages of living in what James Wesley, Rawles often refers to as the American Redoubt is the ample opportunity for full-spectrum training in some of the roughest terrain in the United States.

In the Flathead Valley of Montana in particular, preppers and survivalists abound, with the organizational help of Stewart Rhodes and Oath Keepers, Chuck Baldwin and Liberty Fellowship, and my own Montana Safe Haven Project, liberty minded residents here are surrounded by an atmosphere of independence and self reliance.  If you want to completely immerse yourself in the survivalist dynamic, this is one of the best places to do it.

Spring is now breaking through the winter snows, and soon even more training will be possible, but during the icy months I did get an opportunity to engage in some hands-on practice with a team of people in what I feel is probably the WORST possible scenario for the prepper; the cold weather bug-out.

The bug-out strategy in general is for all intents and purposes a last ditch effort at survival.  It is used only when a collapse is at its apex, your homestead is under siege or at risk of being overrun, or when your secondary retreat location is compromised and unsafe.  During wintertime, the danger is increased tenfold by multiple factors, including:

Limited Mobility: There are ways around it, but usually snow and ice make bugging out, especially on foot, a real headache....

Sturm Ruger & Co.’s announcement that it would stop taking orders until it clears an enormous backlog serves as the latest sign of the boom times for the U.S. firearms business.

Late Wednesday, Sturm Ruger said that in the first quarter, it had received orders for more than 1 million units. And despite “efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders,” Sturm Ruger said.

Hayden’s Note:

I’ve been following this news piece since it broke, and per the status quo, many “liberty sites” jumped to the conclusions that this is somehow a premeditated initiative to cease production of firearms, or control our 2nd Amendment rights.

Instead, this is merely Ruger doing a phenomenal job at creating some of the most popular rifles and affordable handguns – although I wouldn’t recommend any except the 10/22 rifle – and not being able to handle demand.  This increase in demand is indeed likely from the various draconian legislation being passed, the rising popularity of emergency preparedness, and people seeking to invest in tangibles....

Alcohol Can Be a Gas – David Blume

I interviewed David Blume years ago when Truth is Treason was a small, internet radio show on Oracle Broadcasting. He has some extremely fascinating ideas concerning ethanol and fuel, and from an emergency preparedness view, alcohol is invaluable!

Fuel, first-aid, bartering, ability to create or boost a small economy, farming, animal feed, reduction of waste, tangible goods, etc.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t make gasoline for my vehicle, especially in a grid-down scenario. However, I can make ethanol.

For the naysayers who have been sold on the whole, “Ethanol is bad for cars!” campaign, realize this comes from Big Oil. Cars originally ran on ethanol, and with a few simple, minor changes, can easily run on ethanol again. While you might experience a 10% drop in MPG, you gain horsepower (race cars use pure ethanol!), sustainability, and can be made in your backyard for as little as one dollar per gallon. I’m no math whiz, but that’s much better than relying on Big Oil.

“In a nutshell, it’s the blueprint for Peacetime Martial Law and it gives the president the power to take just about anything deemed necessary for “National Defense”, whatever they decide that is.” (The Intel Hub)

While millions of people have been preparing for the possibility of a catastrophic event by relocating to rural homesteads or farms, as well as stockpiling food, water, personal defense armaments and other essential supplies with the intention of utilizing these preparations if the worst happens, the latest executive order signed by President Obama on March 16, 2012 makes clear that in the event of a nationally deemed emergency all of these resources will fall under the authority of the United States government.

Hayden’s Counterpoint:

While I find this EO to be interesting, and most certainly enjoy the work of Activist Post, Intel Hub, and SHTF Plan, I must agree with Doug Mataconis on this matter:

It all sounds pretty scary, and it wasn’t long before the usual suspects were citing this as evidence of some kind of plan for martial law, just as there were people on the left and far-right in asserting that George Bush was going to declare martial law and cancel the elections in 2004 and 2008.

37 Smart Uses of Salt for Non-Toxic Cleaning Purposes

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Food Matters.tv by Melissa Breyer

How many ways can you use salt? According to the Salt Institute, about 14,000! I can’t think of another more versatile mineral. The use of salt to preserve food was one of the early cornerstones of civilization (preservation lessened the dependence on seasonal food, and provided sustenance for traveling over long distances). However, salt was very difficult to obtain. With modern production methods, nowadays salt is the most common and readily available, nonmetallic mineral in the world; in fact, the supply of salt is inexhaustible.

Since at least medieval times, salt (sodium chloride) has been used for cleaning–and ensuing generations have continued to rely on it for all kinds of nifty tricks around the house (these were the days before toxic chemicals promised the convenience of an easy fix!).  So with its non-toxic friendliness and top-dog status as an endlessly abundant resource, let’s jump on the granny bandwagon and swap out some non-toxic solutions for ample, innocuous, and inexpensive salt.

But first, let my inner science geek pipe in for just a second (although if I eat dinner with you, I promise not to ask you to please pass the sodium chloride)....

Wyoming Advances Doomsday Bill, Establishes State Sovereignty & Disaster Contingency

Posted on Feb 26, 2012 in Constitutional & Liberty Issues, Emergency Preparedness & Survival, Political Issues

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Source: Star Tribune via Cryptogon.com

State representatives advanced legislation to launch a study into what Wyoming should do in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States.

House Bill 85 passed on first reading by a voice vote. It would create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government.

The task force would look at the feasibility of Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, if needed. And House members approved an amendment Friday by state Rep. Kermit Brown, R-Laramie, to have the task force also examine conditions under which Wyoming would need to implement its own military draft, raise a standing army, and acquire strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.

The bill’s sponsor, state Rep. David Miller, R-Riverton, has said he doesn’t anticipate any major crises hitting America anytime soon. But with the national debt exceeding $15 trillion and protest movements growing around the country, Miller said Wyoming — which has a comparatively good economy and sound state finances — needs to make sure it’s protected should any unexpected emergency hit the U.S....

The idea of a Get Out of Dodge, or Bug Out Bag is simple in theory, but in practice, takes some thought, time, and effort: it contains everything you might need to survive for the short term during a serious disaster situation. The key element here is time: typically, these are seventy-two hour solutions and are part of a larger plan for longer evacuation or survival scenarios … they are not going to last you forever, but are a good place to start larger-scale emergency planning.  Remember, this is for a very temporary bugout bag.  With some forethought and good planning, you can easily build upon this idea for 14-day, 30-day and even 120-day concepts.

Food & Water: These are things we take for granted, but they are not always available – and snacking on a leather belt or dropping tablets in seriously contaminated water … well, those are not as romantic, practical or safe as they may sound in the stories of war heroes....

Like so many generations before, it was my father who first taught me about tools as I was growing up.  The names of the tools, their uses, how to properly care for them, and what not to do so I could avoid injury were all part of the lessons he ingrained in me.  Early in my adult life, I spent eight years in the military repairing fixed-wing jet aircraft and later, helicopters.  After my time in service was over, I spent several years working in the emergency services sector, including wild land fire fighting and emergency management.  Tools have been a big part of my ability to earn a living and play a vital role in my prepping, my ability to rebuild infrastructure after a disaster, gardening, and homesteading.

Or perhaps the former Vice President of Urban Outfitters…? She got out of the rat race in order to reconnect with her love and enjoy life.

Nick discovers off-grid residents of beaches, the mountains, even an off-grid millionaire who understands the fragility and intricacies of our modern “power grid.”

Whether your goal is more freedom, organic and sustainable farming, alternative architecture or merely finding your escape route from the daily grind, off-grid living is quickly becoming the best new thing among a wide variety of people across the globe!

The video is a bit “environmentalist-leaning” but being off the grid doesn’t mean you have to be some hippie woodsman....

For years, I’ve been involved in various circles of organic gardening, local produce, food co-ops, alternative architecture, and local currencies.  It’s been a passion of mine for quite some time.  In 2008, as I was campaigning for Ron Paul’s Presidential bid, I stumbled across a small website that was offering an experiment in alternative housing, garden co-ops, and liberty-oriented living.  What does that mean, you ask?  I wondered the same thing and looked into it more.

At first, I expected this to be some crazy commune idea and I instantly conjured up images of people living in run-down RVs, huts, and wearing lots of tie-dye.  While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not my idea of an ideal neighborhood or living experiment.  But their website was geared towards liberty lovers and self-reliant people in west Texas, so it couldn’t be too bad.

A brief excerpt:

The process involves forming a co-op of people buying “shares” in the community and these people would be granted land use at a minimum of 1 acre per share, for as long as they homesteaded the land.

In times of uncertainty, we humans like to stockpile and hoard.  We seek information that will keep us safe and provide for our well-being.  One of these topics will invariably center around medical knowledge or first-aid in case of an accident, sickness, or injury.  Many of us already have a well-rounded medical kit, or basic skills in how to treat traumatic injuries.  But one question I see and hear a lot of people talk about is medicine, and their lack of concrete, factual information when it comes to antibiotics – and specifically, whether it is safe to use animal antibiotics in humans.

Many other questions typically revolve around,

“Where can I find prescription-quality medicines?”

“My doctor won’t prescribe me common antibiotics for long-term disasters or bugging out.”

“What medicines should I stockpile?”

What this article will attempt to provide is the answer to these very questions, and more.  While I am no fan of Big Pharma, I  understand the amazing capabilities and modern need for some medicines, such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin, and Penicillin.  There are many natural antibiotics, and antibacterials, in nature....

I came across this web site: SoilWeb: An Online Soil Survey, while doing my daily news search.  Its purpose is to allow users to access NRCS and NCSS 1:24,000 scale detailed soil survey data (SSURGO) in many parts of the lower 48 states.

An interactive map interface allows for panning and zooming, with highways, streets, and aerial photos to assist navigation.

SoilWeb overlays detailed soil information on Google Maps and Google Earth. There’s even a SoilWeb iPhone and Android app allowing you to use the GPS capabilities of your phone to assist in shopping for, say, the perfect vineyard location.

“This could be useful for those considering relocation, as soil make-up and condition should be a consideration for any homestead.” – Survival Blog...

I recently added a vegetable grow bed to my existing fish and water lily pond.  Good, healthy bacteria grow within a balanced fish pond in order to help break down fish waste.  This bacteria is important to the entire aquaponics system.

If you are starting a new pond or system, add “pond starter” to help boost the bacteria population. It is a good idea to add more bacteria every few weeks as there are no downsides to recharging the bacterial environment.

Hayden’s Note:

This is for new ponds.  Established ponds should have a healthy balance and cycle already in place, or means for natural bacterial regrowth.  Also, I would recommend “larger-than-fish tank type” diameter pebbles or rocks to be used in your aquaponic beds.  The more surface area that bacteria can attach to, the better!  About 1/2″ or even 3/4″ should work well!  Also, be sure to check out the related aquaponics articles at the end.

The grow bed I used is a simple “under the bed” storage container, and I placed it on the edge of the pond....
