“When society breaks down, how quickly does our humanity follow?” – Jeannette Catsoulis

As much as I rail against certain aspects of Hollywood, I must admit that I’m a sucker for a good movie, especially one that revolves around those familiar disaster scenarios. And as a bit of a stray from our regular posting categories, I figured I would share some recent movie selections, as well as offer a bit of commentary.

Late this morning, as I was scuttling around the apartment, eyes half-open and nearly spilling my coffee as I bumped into furniture, I settled onto the couch to watch a movie I had been dying to see. With an afternoon forecast of storms and heavy rain, I felt as though this was the perfect chance to watch “One Hundred Mornings“; an Irish, post-apocalyptic …drama?

As Filmmaker Magazine said, it is a haunting, lyrical piece. It’s not an action flick. There is no virus, no zombies, and no comet hurtling towards Earth. Instead, the film allows you to discern what happened and throws you in the midst of it....

The crew over at Urban Farming Guys shows how to go off-grid with your aquaponics, making a simple IBC-tote system, powered by the sun, for under $400. This is scalable by linking more totes together.

Something to note, is that the Urban Farming Guys use an off-the-shelf, easy-setup solar system. It costs around $250, but you can get much better solar panels with a bit of research into the subject matter. The kit they are using appears to be the standard “Harbor Freight”-style, folding kit that is widely available. It works, but there are better panels out there. With that being said, let’s get into some tilapia farming and vegetable growing!

“We’re here with Alex, who’s going to help us demonstrate just how easy this is. First, you’ll need to obtain a food-grade, 275-gallon IBC tote. Get this from Craigslist.org; ranging between $25-100, with food-grade being very important.”

If there’s a single factor that reliably sparks social unrest, it’s food becoming too scarce or too expensive. So argues a group of complex systems theorists in Cambridge, and it makes sense.

In a 2011 paper, researchers at the Complex Systems Institute unveiled a model that accurately explained why the waves of unrest that swept the world in 2008 and 2011 crashed when they did. The number one determinant was soaring food prices. Their model identified a precise threshold for global food prices that, if breached, would lead to worldwide unrest.

The MIT Technology Review explains how CSI’s model works: “The evidence comes from two sources. The first is data gathered by the United Nations that plots the price of food against time, the so-called food price index of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN. The second is the date of riots around the world, whatever their cause.” Plot the data, and it looks like this:

Pretty simple. Black dots are the food prices, red lines are the riots. In other words, whenever the UN’s food price index, which measures the monthly change in the price of a basket of food commodities, climbs above 210, the conditions ripen for social unrest around the world....

For the preppers, the hikers, military, police, construction workers, gardeners, cowboys, home builders, cooks, DIY’er, and anybody who has ever spilled something:

Ultra-Ever Dry is a superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) coating that will completely repel almost any liquid. It uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface. This barrier repels water, oil and other liquids unlike any coating seen before.

Hayden’s Note:

I am *amazed.* Imagine coating your house, car, shoes, or anything else that you never want to clean again!

Disclosure: I do not have any ties to the company or product showcased, I just wanted to share!...

A heartfelt wish of many folks in the US is to have more products manufactured here instead of being imported. This is especially true in the current economic times. Folks realize that spending money locally is a simple way to enhance our communities and standards of living. It often seems like big business is oblivious to the plight of ordinary people and are only concerned with their next quarterly profits and the manager’s bonuses. Fortunately, there are a lot of small businesses that have a lot better handle on things.

waterfilter_kitJust Water, LLC, is very proud to announce that they have successfully ‘on-shored’ the production of ceramic water filters and will very shortly be rolling out various products that use these. Homespun Environmental, LLC, is equally proud to announce that they are the very first distributor to have these American-made ceramic water filters available on their website. Both companies have worked hard to meet customer’s needs and having products made in the USA was high on that list.

Ceramic water filters have been used extensively for many years in third world disaster situations with NGOs and missionary groups....

Instagram is a form of social media that focuses on sharing pictures between users, allowing them to tag photos with names of other users and apply “hashtags” that function as searchable keywords or descriptions for others. It is no longer just a place to post pictures of your food!

One such hashtag that has a rather large following is #igMilitia. It stands for the InstaGram Militia, and started as a way for various photos of guns, gear, and generally tacti-cool stuff to be lumped together and easily found.

Since I’m always looking for new gear when it comes to firearms, outdoor activities, and training, I thought I would share a list of some of the small businesses and personalities that really seem to have an impact on the shooting community and “igMilitia”, whether it be tactical, law enforcement, military, or purely civilian and self defense.

Many of these you’ve likely never heard of, but I believe in supporting original entrepreneurs and small start-ups, so if you know of any others that should be added to this list, please feel free to leave a comment!...

Homesteading with a Shipping Container, Part 9: Installing the Simple Pump

Water is one of the most strategic preps that one can have should the grid go down or we find ourselves caught in the middle of a disaster. All other preparedness plans fail without it, and even if you stock bottled water or have spare filters, if it is a prolonged emergency, eventually you will run out.

That’s where a water pump comes into play. For those with land or a retreat, even a water well in your backyard, if you are relying on electric or motorized pumps to fill your needs, have you developed an alternative energy plan? Do you have a back-up plan when those solar panels get damaged or your batteries are dead?

I believe in having a back-up for my back-ups, and when assessing my water situation at my off-grid, shipping container homestead – the Elysian Fields Project, I decided to cut out the middle man and install a manual water pump as my primary plan.

Should we encounter a prolonged grid-down event, or EMP, this pump will continue delivering water as long as I can pump the handle!...

Sheriff Says 911 Isn’t Best Option; Safety No Longer a Spectator Sport, “I Need You in the Game”

Kevin Hayden – TruthisTreason.net

Milwaukee area Sheriff David Clarke released a public service announcement urging citizens to seek firearm training and fight back against the criminal elements that seek to do them harm.

In the PSA, Sheriff Clarke cites recent police cutbacks and layoffs, along with mentioning prolonged police arrival times and that calling 911 might not be in your best interest initially.  Sheriff Clarke encourages his constituents to “be prepared”, and candidly states that their safety is no longer a spectator sport; he needs them in the game alongside his deputies.

“…your safety — it’s no longer a spectator sport; I need you in the game.”

He goes on to offer three choices for would-be victims: beg for mercy from violent criminals, hide under the bed, or fight back!

“It’s your duty to protect yourself and your family,” he says. “We’re partners now. Can I count on you?”

Sheriff Clarke has been receiving an onslaught of complaints and calls for his resignation from various groups, along with the President of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Roy Felber, suggesting the public service announcement is more closely aligned to a call for vigilantism....

Worried about draconian Internet laws? Creeping surveillance? The Internet is still a tool of tremendous power, but a deep rot has set in. We have caught it early and we are fighting to stop this rot, but there are other options we can begin exploring to hedge our bets and enhance our current efforts.

piratebox2Image: The PirateBox in use on a handheld device. Once the PirateBox is up and running, either on a standalone device like the one pictured to the right (background), or on your laptop as described here, it will appear as another WiFi network for people in range to connect to. Once connected, files can be freely shared, and there is even a chat client users can communicate with. It is just as useful as a file server for a small business, as it is for circumventing the draconian criminalization of Internet file sharing.

This paper discusses the two main styles of ceramic filter cartridges that are currently on the market.  These are the ‘candle’ filter and the ‘dome’ filter.  I often get questions on whether one is better than the other and have also seen several DIY blogs on the internet showing both of these.  I figured it was a good idea to write a short paper on this topic to add as a reference to the technical notes on my website and to help folks interested in researching this.

For those who may be unfamiliar with ceramic water filters, here is a brief overview.

Cut-away diagram of a DIY water filter. Much cheaper than the Big Berks.

Cut-away diagram of a DIY water filter. Much cheaper than the Big Berks.

The ceramic water filter cartridge consists of a ceramic shell, containing colloidal silver and enclosing some amount of activated carbon.  The shell has very small pore openings that allow water to pass through but are too small for bacteria.  The silver keeps bacteria from growing on the shell, and the activated charcoal adsorbs chemicals that are present in the water.  ...

In July, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration finally decided to ban Bisphenol A (BPA) from bottles and sippy cups. They did that to simply boost consumer confidence, and that was about it.

BPA: Regulation at the Speed of Profit Decrease

People who track the progress of BPA regulation are the same people who like glacier racing as a spectator sport. In July, as you should know, the FDA finally banned BPA from baby drinking containers because the American Chemistry Council (the lobbyists who’ve kept BPA in our bodies all these years) decided they would voluntarily do the ban and so it would make a good show if it became an official rule. I’m not being cynical (this time), even the New York Times says that’s how it is. Hey, now that’s progress – it only took the FDA two years from the 2010 reversal of their previous “BPA is safe” mantra to get it out of sippy cups. Consumer safety at the speed of light, friends.

Hayden’s Note:

I talk about food, Big Pharma, FDA, and toxins such as BPA quite regularly here on Truth, so I wanted to post an article written by a great new website called SchemaByte.com.

Ham Radio Cheat Sheet – an InfoGraphic

It can be said that communication is one of the most important aspects of disaster contingencies.  It is relied upon by every facet of response, rescue, and recovery, but is often times damaged or hampered from the actual disaster.  Once the usual lines of communication go silent, many jurisdictions are left in the dark regarding critical decisions and fail to receive important updates because they have no back-up plans.  This is where amateur radio, often referred to as HAM radio, fills in the gap.

With the ability to broadcast from your home, vehicle, or on mobile units, and cover an incredibly large and diverse region rather inexpensively, ham radio should be on the forefront of your preparedness checklist.  It is also quite easy to power ham radio units with small solar panels for off-grid or remote communications. While there are various regulations concerning the use of the airwaves, one can obtain a license to become a radio operator for disaster preparedness, hobby, or recreation with just a small amount of studying and a brief written exam....

An EMP, or Electro Magnetic Pulse, is generated from the detonation of a nuclear device or quite possibly, extreme solar activity, such as that which was experienced in 1859, 1989, and as recent as 1994.  The US Government and military have studied these phenomenon extensively and several reports have been issued regarding EMP effects on vehicles, computer networks, critical infrastructure, and more.  In this report, we’ll cover many of the topics discussed and researched in regards to geomagnetic anomalies, solar storm activity, and the effects of an electromagnetic pulse.  It should be noted, however, that Congress has largely ignored the EMP Commission’s warnings and our hospitals, trucking industry, and critical infrastructure remain highly vulnerable.

In the late summer of 1859, a great solar storm hit the planet. This storm was the product of a coronal mass ejection from the Sun. While the science and physics behind these coronal ejections is interesting, it can also be long winded for some readers so I’ll keep this brief....

Barter Economy: 50g Gold and Silver CombiBar Can Snap into 1g Micro Bars

Valcambi sa, an international gold refiner and bar manufacturer based in Switzerland, has debuted their new CombiBar, a .999 gold or silver, credit card sized “bar” that can be broken into 1 gram increments for smaller transactions.

combibar5

For those who invest in precious metals as a form of barter or alternative currency, the traditionally higher premiums on small gold bars are cost-prohibitive to many buyers, making silver much more attractive due to its lower cost per ounce and ease of use in transactions.

Gold is typically reserved for larger purchases or as a store of wealth, until now.  The CombiBar allows an investor to purchase 50 gram or 100 gram “bars” that can snap apart into individual, smaller “bars” or sheets.  The cards are available in .999 silver, palladium, and platinum!

It should be noted that like all precious metal purchases, there is a premium, and according to my figures, the CombiBar runs approximately 15-25% higher than spot price, depending on what precious metal you purchase.

Typical bullion prices only command a 5-10% premium, so it boils down to, “Are you willing to spend a bit more now for easier use in the future?...

After nationwide calls to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Americans concerned about the government’s coming move to restrict the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession of firearms deemed too dangerous to be in the hands of private citizens are cleaning out gun stores from coast to coast.

While some retailers have made the decision to suspend sales and stop selling certain firearms altogether, others are seeing sales skyrocket to never before seen levels. Parking lots are packed and hopeful shoppers are waiting hours for their chance to get their hands on weapons, parts and magazines that may soon be banned under Federal mandates.

The following photos taken over a three day period at a local gun store give us a glimpse of just how fast gun stores are clearing out their inventory. According to the shop owner who took these pictures, their store was selling upwards of one thousand guns per day.

Here’s how the store looked on the Sunday before the frenzy:

On Monday:

By Tuesday, shelves were almost clean:

Magazines, especially high capacity magazines, are selling at such a rapid pace that supply and demand has led some retailers to charge three times as much for a single magazine then they did just a week prior to the frenzy....
