Wisconsin raw dairy farmer Vernon Hershberger has had it tough, as government tyrants in the Dairy State have repeatedly targeted him for legally supplying raw milk and other farm-fresh foods to members of a private buying club, for which he now faces a potential three-year prison term and more than $10,000 in fines. In his defense, a group of food sovereignty advocates will be holding a rally on March 2nd at the Sauk County Courthouse in Baraboo, Wisc., where he is set to appear for a court hearing.

“The FDA reign of terror against family farms who are serving the needs of private buying clubs is culminating in one Wisconsin farmer facing federal charges,” said Kimberly Hartke from theWeston A. Price Foundation. “Citizens deserve the freedom to choose, and are staging an event in support of this principled farmer, Vernon Hershberger. The Food and Drug Administration secretly monitored the personal e-mail of a group of its own scientists and doctors after they warned Congress that the agency was approving medical devices that they believed posed unacceptable risks to patients, government documents show.

The surveillance — detailed in e-mails and memos unearthed by six of the scientists and doctors, who filed a lawsuit against the FDA in U.S. District Court in Washington last week — took place over two years as the plaintiffs accessed their personal Gmail accounts from government computers.

Information garnered this way eventually contributed to the harassment or dismissal of all six of the FDA employees, the suit alleges. All had worked in an office responsible for reviewing devices for cancer screening and other purposes.

Copies of the e-mails show that, starting in January 2009, the FDA intercepted communications with congressional staffers and draft versions of whistleblower complaints complete with editing notes in the margins. The agency also took electronic snapshots of the computer desktops of the FDA employees and reviewed documents they saved on the hard drives of their government computers....

In what can only be described as a food freedom win, the FDA has reversed their decision to de-regulate antibiotic use in livestock, poultry, and swine.  I wrote about this a few weeks ago and mentioned that CAFOs, or Confined/Commercial Animal Feeding Operations, accounted for roughly 80% of the antibiotic use in America.  That is a staggering figure!

These commercial farms inject the animals with sub-therapeutic levels of common antibiotics in order to accelerate weight gains, not to mention the fact that cows and other livestock tend to suffer from a variety of ailments and disease when fed a diet of GMO corn, soy, and other grains in these tightly packed, unsanitary commercial lots.

Cows, as we all learned in elementary school, eat grass all day, and the cheaply made, genetically modified grains they are fed in CAFOs disrupt their normal digestive system, to say the least.

Environmental and consumer groups have condemned the US Food and Drug Administration’s move to renege on its long-held policy to regulate the use of human antibiotics in animal feed. Last week, the agency quietly announced it was withdrawing its plan to limit the use of antibiotics fed to healthy livestock intended for human consumption.

The groups also criticized the timing of the announcement, which was made during the holiday season and disclosed only in the federal register.

[Pollan] said there was “no question” that meat could be produced without human antibiotics, as the EU has already banned them.  Livestock consume about 80% of the antibiotics sold in the US.

The problem, said Pollan, boils down to a lack of political will in the face of powerful industry interests. “There’s a lot of corporate money in politics these days,” he said. “Here you’re going up against not just one powerful industry, but two. This administration has had enough trouble going after individual powerful industries. That they would prevail against two of them joined together was too much to hope for.”

Sugar producers think recent marketing efforts by manufacturers of high-fructose corn syrup aren’t so sweet.

In a lawsuit filed earlier this year, three sugar distributors say that equating HFCS with real sugar — with slogans like “your body can’t tell the difference” — misleads consumers.

The sugar industry is now suing the Corn Refiner’s Association for making unproven claims about High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association, said the lawsuit is without merit, as HFCS and sugar are nutritionally and metabolically equivalent.

“Sugar is sugar,” Erickson said.

It should be noted that Ms. Erickson contacted me earlier this year regarding my articles on high fructose corn syrup, GMO corn, and how sugars effect the human body and the email was certainly an attempt to persuade my opinion on HFCS’s effects.  But that’s what lobbyists are paid to do.  Right?

The Corn Refiners Association essentially represents the entire HFCS industry and is little more than a massive lobbying and PR front.

To say, “Sugar is sugar,” is blatantly false and simply misleading.  Especially in light of the fact that it’s almost elementary knowledge that there are a half dozen different types of sugar and each are processed and regulated differently in the body.  Each have their own unique effect on the human system and we typically consume several different sugars on a daily basis....

David Hochstetler and Richard Hebron, two farmers subpoenaed by the US Department of Justice at the behest of the FDA, have found help, and protection, in an unexpected place… local Sheriff Brad Rogers, who stepped in to the situation and notified the DOJ that if they wanted to have any dealings with those under his protection and jurisdiction, they would have to go through him.

He also warned the DOJ that if they continued to visit David’s farm and property without a proper warrant, he or his officers would arrest them for trespassing.

Even in the face of severe coercive pressure (the DOJ threatened Sheriff Rogers with felony arrest), Sheriff Rogers stood tall and did not back down.

My words to Rogers? “Thank you!”

David Hochstetler has now received a letter stating that he has been released from the subpoena until further notice and that the hearing is cancelled.

Farm-to-Fork Dinner Fiasco

What an evening we had this last Friday night! It had all the makings of a really great novel: drama, suspense, anticipation, crisis, heroic efforts, villains and victors, resolution, and a happy ending. Video here.

The evening was everything I had dreamed and hoped it would be. The weather was perfect, the farm was filled with friends and guests roaming around talking about organic, sustainable farming practices. Our young interns were teaching and sharing their passion for farming and their role in it, (a high hope for our future!) and the pig didn’t get loose.

Our guests were excited to spend an evening together. The food was prepared exquisitely. The long dinner table, under the direction of dear friends, was absolutely stunningly beautiful. The music was superb. The stars were bright and life was really good.

And then…

for a few moments, it felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath us and my wonderful world came crashing down. As guests were mingling, finishing tours of the farm, and while the first course of the meal was being prepared and ready to be sent out, a Southern Nevada Health District employee came for an inspection....

“Don’t turn us into criminals over milk!”

A group of mothers from across the country who feed their children raw milk plan to hold a demonstration to protest the FDA’s crackdown on raw milk production and distribution, arguing that the government campaign not only criminalizes raw milk, but criminalizes the American citizens who buy and consume it.

I’ve recently gone mostly dairy-free, even though I love milk. In this video, Adam Kokesh (Formally the host of RT’s Adam vs. The Man) interviews the leader of Food, Not Bombs regarding the Parks Service harassing him for giving away free apples to nearby protesters.  They informed him this was against the law.  However, if he were giving away oranges or bananas, it would be fine.  An interesting bit towards the end is when the leader reveals that his grandfather had actually been a senior Parks Service member and had been responsible for securing the tract of land that was later turned into that particular National Park....

The recent class-action lawsuit brought against Taco Bell raised questions about the quality of food many Americans eat each day.

Chief among those concerns is the use of cellulose (wood pulp), an extender whose use in a roster of  food products, from crackers and ice creams to puddings and baked goods, is now being exposed. What you’re actually paying for – and consuming – may be surprising.

Cellulose is virgin wood pulp that has been processed and manufactured to different lengths for functionality , though use of it and its variant forms (cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcry stalline cellulose, etc.) is deemed safe for human consumption, according to the FDA, which regulates most food industry products. The government agency sets no limit on the amount of cellulose that can be used in food products meant for human consumption.

[Note: Humans are unable to digest cellulose since we lack the appropriate enzymes to break it down.  This is a food adulterant and another ex ample of the wholly corrupt nature of the federal agency responsible for food safety but continues to prove itself more concerned with corporate profit....

It’s been on the docket since 2007 for the Food & Drug Administration to revamp nutrient guidelines for the American population. The FDA says it is close to issuing a new guideline that may water-down essential nutrients in foods and multivitamins.

At issue is whether the FDA will use the relied-upon RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) that covers the nutrient needs of 98% of the population or the EAR (Estimated Average Requirement) which only addresses the nutrient level needed to meet the needs of 50% of the population.

While the proposed FDA rule is anticipated any time now (it will have to withstand a public comment period), one wonders whether the FDA will take into consideration a newly-published report showing the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) level would leave many Americans short of meeting their need for essential vitamins and minerals.

Note: Below, ‘Plaintiffs’ refers to James Stewart, Rawesome’s founder, Sharon Palmer, owner of Healthy Family Farms, and Victoria Bloch. The trio were charged with the production and sale of unpasteurized goat milk, goat cheese, and other products; and with “mislabeling cheese.” They were also charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit a crime.

“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a new ‘fundamental right’ to produce, obtain, and consume unpasteurized milk lacks any support in law.

“There is no ‘deeply rooted’ historical tradition of unfettered access to foods of all kinds.”

“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a ‘fundamental right to their own bodily and physical health, which includes what foods they do and do not choose to consume for themselves and their families,’ is similarly unavailing because plaintiffs do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish.”

Bridget, the “lemon lady,” has responded and left a comment below.  It appears that the Feds were going to get this lemon tree, one way or another and threatened her with a potential SWAT raid ifshe did not comply.  Food Police thuggery at its finest.

A Wisconsin woman says she’s more than a little sour now that the U.S. government has forced her to turn over her lemon tree on the grounds that it could spread disease.

Bridget Donovan bought the tree online for $70 nearly three years ago and planted it in the yard of her Waukesha home, where she and her niece nurtured it, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

It grew and yielded lemons and seemed to be healthy.

Then she got a letter from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Unfortunately, Meyer Lemon Tree (the seller) shipped your tree in violation of multiple quarantine laws enacted to prevent the spread of harmful plant diseases and pests,” the letter stated.

The Journal Sentinel said the tree had come from Florida, under quarantine at the time of the purchase because of diseases, and the government tracked where nursery stock had been shipped....

An Amish farm in Pennsylvania has been stopped from selling contraband milk after a year-long federal government sting operation waste of tax dollars and manpower.

The Rainbow Acres Farm was found to have been smuggling banned unpasteurized milk to customers in Maryland.  Raw milk drinkers claim that pasteurization eliminates good bacteria and changes the taste.  But the Food and Drug Administration say unpasteurised milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E.coli and listeria.

The FDA began to look into the farm, owned by Dan Allgyer, when an investigator used aliases to sign up to the farm’s internet group and placed orders for raw milk to be delivered to Maryland.

Sales are illegal in 11 states and the District, with other states having varying restrictions on purchase or consumption.

Karin Edgett, a Washington DC resident, told the Washington Times: ‘I look at this as the FDA is in cahoots with the large milk producers.

‘I don’t want the FDA and my tax dollars to go to shut down a farm that hasn’t had any complaints against it....

Want an undeniable truth?

Our government is out of control.

To deny that is to deny all sense of reason and logic; to regress to your simple-minded, consensus trance thought (un)process.

To me, this is the fatal flaw in the argument of all those who support government, or in this case, BIG government. Because government ALWAYS grows and ALWAYS becomes an all-powerful entity that rules with an iron fist. I suppose you could call that undeniable truth number two.

I personally don’t subscribe to societal norms. My logic is simple, really: most things people do — and do without asking the question “why” just because “that’s what people do” — lead to harm.

In politics…

Most people choose a corrupt Democrat or a corrupt Republican. We only have two choices, after all. Why vote for a third party when they can’t win? So the choice is invariably between two scumbag despots who want to control you, and the country (or state or county or city, depending on the election) ends up with a corrupt leader....

Genetically modified foods have become so ubiquitous in the US that even the grocery store ‘Whole Foods’ now admits it cannot keep biotech foods off its shelves. A representative for the corporation acknowledged in May of 2011 that the realities of the marketplace have forced a shift in the company’s previous no-GMO’s policy.

Joe Dickson, quality standards coordinator for Whole Foods Markets, notes that GMO’s dominate the market, especially for corn, soy and canola crops from which ingredients in most processed foods are derived. “Until there’s federal government mandated labeling of GMO ingredients, there’s no way to tell if packaged products contain GMO ingredients,” Dickson said. “Our approach is to work in the spirit of partnership with our suppliers … to encourage them to take active steps to avoid GMO ingredients.”

In spite of public skepticism about GMO foods, the FDA has backed Monsanto and other corporations, declaring that modified foods do not require special labeling letting consumers know they are eating Frankenfoods. This is in contrast to the European Union, where public concern over health issues resulted in a moratorium on GMO’s....

Ever since the birth control pill was approved by the FDA in 1960, scientists in the West have been looking for a male equivalent. It’s been a rocky road, in part for biological reasons: Hormonally, it’s much easier to control a single monthly event like ovulation than to try to stop the endless onslaught of sperm.

An equivalent “pill” for men would somehow have to stop sperm production without neutralizing their libido or erectile function. Pharmaceutical companies and government agencies have sunk millions into hormone-based contraceptive research that has yielded few viable products.
