Just a couple of decades ago, quitting coffee was a prerequisite for establishing a healthy diet and adopting a healthier lifestyle. But gradually, several new research studies into coffee drinking have provided health benefits from drinking coffee. So now we have both positive and negative health effects from drinking coffee.

It’s not just the caffeine, but a synergistic combination of caffeine and an unnamed natural compound stimulate higher blood levels of GCSF (granulocyte colony stimulating factor), which protect the brain from dementia and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

This conclusion was published in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, May/June 2011 from research by a team at the University of South Florida.

Coffee drinkers also showed lower rates of diabetes and strokes. An American Heart Association’s journal, Stroke, published findings from a long term Swedish study involving 35,000 women. Dr. Susanna Larsson led this study from The Division of Nutritional Epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute’s National Institute of Environmental Medicine.

The heaviest coffee consumption is commonly found in regions that are often overcast, drizzly, and dreary.

Farm-to-Fork Dinner Fiasco

What an evening we had this last Friday night! It had all the makings of a really great novel: drama, suspense, anticipation, crisis, heroic efforts, villains and victors, resolution, and a happy ending. Video here.

The evening was everything I had dreamed and hoped it would be. The weather was perfect, the farm was filled with friends and guests roaming around talking about organic, sustainable farming practices. Our young interns were teaching and sharing their passion for farming and their role in it, (a high hope for our future!) and the pig didn’t get loose.

Our guests were excited to spend an evening together. The food was prepared exquisitely. The long dinner table, under the direction of dear friends, was absolutely stunningly beautiful. The music was superb. The stars were bright and life was really good.

And then…

for a few moments, it felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath us and my wonderful world came crashing down. As guests were mingling, finishing tours of the farm, and while the first course of the meal was being prepared and ready to be sent out, a Southern Nevada Health District employee came for an inspection....

“Don’t turn us into criminals over milk!”

A group of mothers from across the country who feed their children raw milk plan to hold a demonstration to protest the FDA’s crackdown on raw milk production and distribution, arguing that the government campaign not only criminalizes raw milk, but criminalizes the American citizens who buy and consume it.

I’ve recently gone mostly dairy-free, even though I love milk. I see too many complications and dangers as an adult consuming any animal milk.  Instead, I now only drink coconut or rice milk.  But!  I fully support these moms in their fight against the FDA.  For a good starting point on information about the potential cancer/digestion dangers associated with milk, watch the documentary, “Forks Over Knives.”

Prior to their peaceful demonstration, a caravan of mothers will cross state lines with raw milk and invite FDA to witness what the agency wrongly considers to be a criminal act.  Media are invited to ride along as embedded reporters to report on how the FDA responds to what it wrongly terms a violation of the law....

During October, there will be runs, walks, and other fund raising schemes for “curing cancer.”  The most notorious fund raiser is the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. They display the most pink within the pink ribbon culture. Their mission statement is a world without breast cancer. So why are they ignoring existing cancer cures?

Woe to any other non-profit fund raising group that uses their event or activity linked to the phrase “… for the cure.” Komen threatens them with lawsuits. It’s okay for Komen’s “corporate partners,” for example KFC’s “Buckets for the Cure” not long ago. One wonders how Komen will protect the word “hope” that they’re using these days.

Komen enlists businesses to display the pink ribbon or color a product pink “(item) for the cure” or “(item) of hope.” This has come to be known as “pink washing”. It involves businesses donating small portions of their sales revenue to Komen. Often the businesses sell products that suppress the immune system or contain carcinogenic ingredients.

Besides KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) there have been many other unhealthy contributors “for the cure.” Some of them sell cosmetics that contain carcinogenic ingredients.

A new paper reviewing data from 19 animal studies shows that consuming genetically modified (GM) corn or soybeans leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice, particularly in livers and kidneys (http://www.enveurope.com/content/23…). “Other organs may be affected too, such as the heart and spleen, or blood cells,” stated the paper. In fact some of the animals fed genetically modified organisms had altered body weights, which is “a very good predictor of side effects in various organs.”

I’ve written extensively about GMO corn and grass-fed cows.  This article is just another study that validates the dangers involved with consuming genetically modified foods.  Not only are cows designed to eat grass, but after feeding them GMO corn and soy, they develop a range of problems.  Those problems effect the steak on your plate.  That’s why many large commercial feedlots use so many antibiotics on their cattle!  If they didn’t, they would be dead after only a few months.  There are numerous other studies that show reproductive issues in 2nd and 3rd generations, sterility in male species, organ failure, spontaneous abortions, and many more side effects....

The adulteration and modification of some of the planet’s most widely used crops has changed our food landscape.  Chemicals, preservatives, genetic modification and low-cost substitutions and fillers have wrecked meals that were once healthy for us.  Stepping inside of a grocery store nowadays, we find ourselves in a dangerous and toxic new world.  The introduction of genetically modified organisms into the food supply in the 1990’s, coupled with rampant use of carcinogens such as aspartame and substitutions like high fructose corn syrup, set up the perfect ingredients to form a deadly concoction known as processed food.  Sadly, this is what encompasses the average American diet.

Used in the ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, curcumin is a naturally powerful anticancer compound that has been found to decrease brain tumor size in animals by 81 percent in more than 9 studies. A derivative of turmeric, curcumin is the pigment responsible for turmeric’s yellow-orange color. Each 100 grams of turmeric contains around 3 to 5 grams of curcumin, though turmeric is a also very powerful on its own. New studies are shedding light on curcumin, and illuminating its numerous benefits on cancer and other diseases.

Researchers experimenting with curcumin in the treatment of a fatal brain cancer known as glioblastoma (GBMs) published their groundbreaking findings in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in July.

Adding scientific basis to previous findings surrounding the positive effects of curcumin, they showed that the compound dramatically decreased brain tumors in 9 out of the 11 studies examined by 81 percent. The recent class-action lawsuit brought against Taco Bell raised questions about the quality of food many Americans eat each day.

Chief among those concerns is the use of cellulose (wood pulp), an extender whose use in a roster of  food products, from crackers and ice creams to puddings and baked goods, is now being exposed. What you’re actually paying for – and consuming – may be surprising.

Cellulose is virgin wood pulp that has been processed and manufactured to different lengths for functionality , though use of it and its variant forms (cellulose gum, powdered cellulose, microcry stalline cellulose, etc.) is deemed safe for human consumption, according to the FDA, which regulates most food industry products. The government agency sets no limit on the amount of cellulose that can be used in food products meant for human consumption.

[Note: Humans are unable to digest cellulose since we lack the appropriate enzymes to break it down.  This is a food adulterant and another ex ample of the wholly corrupt nature of the federal agency responsible for food safety but continues to prove itself more concerned with corporate profit....

For the last twenty years, veterans of the Persian Gulf War of 1991 have been complaining of a range of ailments, including pain, fatigue, and problems with memory and concentration. And for just as long, the causes have remained uncertain and there has been a tendency by the military to attribute the complaints to post-traumatic stress disorder.

Now a long-term study at the University of Texas in Dallas has used a new technique to measure blood flow in the brains of sufferers and has detected “marked abnormalities” in brain function that can probably be attributed to low levels of exposure to sarin nerve gas. This abnormal blood flow has persisted or even worsened over the eleven years of the study.

“The findings mark a significant advancement in our understanding of the syndrome, which was for years written off by the Defense Department and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a form of combat stress rather than an objectively diagnosable injury,” reports the Dallas Observer.

“Dr. Robert Haley, chief epidemiologist at UT Southwestern, and a cadre of clinicians and researchers, have struggled with the government for some 18 years for research funding and to have the syndrome recognized as a legitimate war injury,” the paper notes....

It’s been on the docket since 2007 for the Food & Drug Administration to revamp nutrient guidelines for the American population. The FDA says it is close to issuing a new guideline that may water-down essential nutrients in foods and multivitamins.

At issue is whether the FDA will use the relied-upon RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) that covers the nutrient needs of 98% of the population or the EAR (Estimated Average Requirement) which only addresses the nutrient level needed to meet the needs of 50% of the population.

While the proposed FDA rule is anticipated any time now (it will have to withstand a public comment period), one wonders whether the FDA will take into consideration a newly-published report showing the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) level would leave many Americans short of meeting their need for essential vitamins and minerals.

Here’s a quick follow-up article to the one posted a few days ago about the Rawesome Food Club raid. Carefully read the statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration.

Note: Below, ‘Plaintiffs’ refers to James Stewart, Rawesome’s founder, Sharon Palmer, owner of Healthy Family Farms, and Victoria Bloch. The trio were charged with the production and sale of unpasteurized goat milk, goat cheese, and other products; and with “mislabeling cheese.” They were also charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit a crime.

According to the FDA…

“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a new ‘fundamental right’ to produce, obtain, and consume unpasteurized milk lacks any support in law.

“There is no ‘deeply rooted’ historical tradition of unfettered access to foods of all kinds.”

“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a ‘fundamental right to their own bodily and physical health, which includes what foods they do and do not choose to consume for themselves and their families,’ is similarly unavailing because plaintiffs do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish.”

An Amish farm in Pennsylvania has been stopped from selling contraband milk after a year-long federal government sting operation waste of tax dollars and manpower.

The Rainbow Acres Farm was found to have been smuggling banned unpasteurized milk to customers in Maryland.  Raw milk drinkers claim that pasteurization eliminates good bacteria and changes the taste.  But the Food and Drug Administration say unpasteurised milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E.coli and listeria.

The FDA began to look into the farm, owned by Dan Allgyer, when an investigator used aliases to sign up to the farm’s internet group and placed orders for raw milk to be delivered to Maryland.

Sales are illegal in 11 states and the District, with other states having varying restrictions on purchase or consumption.

Karin Edgett, a Washington DC resident, told the Washington Times: ‘I look at this as the FDA is in cahoots with the large milk producers.

‘I don’t want the FDA and my tax dollars to go to shut down a farm that hasn’t had any complaints against it....

Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods.

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle’s research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain....

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Mental Disorders in Children

A new study shows that children with psychosis and other severe mental health disorders also have twice as much vitamin D deficiency as children who are mentally healthy.

The study, presented to the American Psychiatric Association 2011 Annual Meeting in Honolulu in June by researchers from the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland showed that 21 percent of children with symptoms of severe psychiatric problems had vitamin D levels below what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends.

Vitamin D is so easy to obtain.  In fact, it’s free.  Simply stand in sunlight for awhile and our amazing human bodies will convert solar energy into usable human nutrition.  Easy, huh?  Get your kids off the couch, turn off the video games and TV and soak up some vitamin D! 

That level compared with 14 percent of children who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, a population-based study that assessed the nutrition and health status of both children and adults in the U.S.

“That is 50 percent more than children in a normal population, so based on our findings this means that 1 out of 5 kids with severe mental illness has low vitamin D levels,” lead investigator Keith Cheng, M.D., told Medscape Medical News....
