Peru Votes for 10-Year Ban on GMOs

Posted on Jun 24, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

In the world of genetically modified foods, it is rare to find a country or nation that has not been over-run with genetic contamination.  In the United States, the vast majority of all corn and soy is either intentionally engineered or has been contaminated.  Countless small farmers have gone bankrupt due to contamination of their corn crops and the subsequent lawsuits from Monsanto that quickly follow.  Large parts of Mexico continue to lose family heirloom varieties due to passing trucks dropping GE kernals on the sides of roads or pollen blowing in the wind from adjacent GMO fields.

But there are a few safe(r) havens for quality food.  Germany is one of the leaders in this field, banning or requiring labeling on GMO products; the UK – only due to consumer demand and a grassroots effort – requires labeling; but now Peru joins that crowd.  Peru’s Plenary Session of Congress enacted a ten-year moratorium on genetically modified crops in open defiance to the previous government administration’s pushes for legalization and embracement of GMOs.

Sadly, Peru’s neighbor, Brazil, has welcomed genetically modified foods with open arms, leading to scores of GMO crops being distributed worldwide.

Support Efforts to Block GM Potato Plantings by Signing Petition

Posted on Jun 02, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

Source: Natural News

Last week, NaturalNews covered the ongoing battle being waged by Greenpeace activists in Sweden against the illicit planting of BASF’s genetically-modified (GM) potato, Amflora, which was deceitfully approved in the country based on shoddy studies (…). After being arrested and released twice, the “human shield” is once again back at the warehouse where it still plans to stop the plantings — and these tireless defenders of food integrity need your help to ensure that the “Frankenpotatoes” never make it into the ground.

Current European Union (EU) law forbids the planting of Amflora because it contains a genetic resistance to antibiotics, which experts agree is a threat to the already problematic rise in antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.” And while the Swedish government admits that the safety studies used to approve Amflora were inadequate, it is doing nothing to stop plantings of the GM crop in the country’s northern crop fields.

Hayden’s Note:

It is now being discovered that the recent E. Coli outbreak in Germany and parts of the EU are due to a never-before-seen superbug, likely from the overuse of antibiotics in livestock....

Children of the Corn: GMO Sterility and Spermicides

Posted on May 31, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

Source: Salem News

There has been a concerted national effort by citizens to have the US government label GMOs.  Opposing it are governments intent not only to keep them unlabeled in the US but efforts at the international level by the US government to remove all labeling of GMOs through Codex Alimentarius.  The problem is that Codex applies to food, and GMOs don’t qualify.

William Engdahl wrote in March of 2010 about a USDA funded project to create a GM corn that sterilizes people.GMO, glyphosate and population reduction

One long-standing project of the US Government has been to perfect a genetically-modified variety of corn, the diet staple in Mexico and many other Latin American countries. The corn has been field tested in tests financed by the US Department of Agriculture along with a small California bio-tech company named Epicyte.  Announcing his success at a 2001 press conference, the president of Epicyte, Mitch Hein, pointing to his GMO corn plants, announced, “We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies.” 14

Hein explained that they had taken antibodies from women with a rare condition known as immune infertility, isolated the genes that regulated the manufacture of those infertility antibodies, and, using genetic engineering techniques, had inserted the genes into ordinary corn seeds used to produce corn plants....

Discovery of Monsanto Bt Insecticide in Human Blood Proves GMO Toxin a Threat to Human Health

Posted on May 16, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

The biotechnology industry’s house of cards appears to be crumbling, as a new study out of the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, recently found Bt toxin, a component of certain genetically-modified (GM) crops, in human blood samples for the first time. Set to be published in the peer-reviewed journal Reproductive Toxicology the new study shreds the false notion that Bt is broken down by the digestive system, and instead shows that the toxin definitively persists in the bloodstream.

Industry mouthpieces have long alleged that Bt toxin, which is derived from a soil bacterium known as Bacillus thuringiensis, is harmless to humans. The built-in pesticide has been integrated into certain GM crops to ward off pests. Bt corn, for instance, has actually been designed to produce the toxin directly inside its kernels, which are later eaten by both livestock and humans (…).

In the recent study, researchers Aziz Aris and Samuel Leblanc evaluated 30 pregnant women and 39 non-pregnant women who had come to the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS) in Quebec, Can., for a tubectomy.

California Votes to Require Labeling (But Not Ban) of GMO Franken-Salmon

Posted on May 09, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

With the USDA expected to approve genetically modified (GMO) salmon in the near future – without any serious safety research – it may devolve on the states to try to minimize the potential negative impact.

The California Assembly Health Committee in Sacramento on May 3 approved a bill requiring that all GMO salmon sold in California contain clear and prominent labeling.

Hayden’s Note:

Well.  It’s a start.  Hopefully more and more states begin to exercise their rights and require ALL genetically modified foods to be labeled.  How wonderful would THAT be?  Germany bans GMO imports.  Europe requires labels.  America?  We like to decieve.  We certainly wouldn’t want to hurt the GMO corn farmers, or the high fructose refiners.  We wouldn’t want the public to realize that 85% of their food is GMO!  Can you imagine how many products would require that label?  Just about….everything.  And I bet we would see the market – the people! – make healthier choices, even if it costs a bit more.  And just think; we did it without limiting freedoms or choices. ...

High Levels of GMO Agrochemicals Found in Breast Milk of Brazilian Mothers

Posted on Apr 21, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

Source: Natural News

The pesticides and herbicides used to treat genetically-modified organisms (GMO) are showing up in significant amounts in rainwater, water wells, and even mothers’ breast milk, according to new research out of Brazil. Particularly among residents living near massive GMO monoculture operations, research reveals that 100 percent of women tested positive for at least one agrochemical in their breast milk, and cumulatively tested at agrochemical levels much higher than what is even permitted in cow’s milk.

In 2006, an airplane spraying accident contaminated the entire Brazilian city of Lucas do Rio Verde with untold levels of toxic agrochemicals. Residents of that city are already exposed to more than 35 gallons of agrochemicals in a year, but during that particular year, residents were exposed to even higher amounts. As a result, researchers decided to delve deeper into what the effects of that exposure have been on the population.

According to an investigation out of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, a sampling of breast milk from 62 women revealed that all were contaminated with at least one dangerous agrochemical.

Documentary Investigates War Being Waged by Biotech Against Scientists Who Expose Truth About GMOs

Posted on Apr 18, 2011 in Featured Articles – Kevin Hayden

Source: Natural News

In order to maintain its massive charade of deception in claiming that genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) are the safe, practical solution to the world’s food problems, the biotechnology industry has had to silence and destroy the lives of many in the scientific community. In the hard-hitting new documentary Scientists Under Attack – Genetic Engineering in the Magnetic Field of Money, German filmmaker Bertram Verhaag explores the heavy hand of the biotechnology industry in steering “science” towards its own interests, and eliminating the actual, legitimate science that exposes genetic engineering (GE) as the fraud that it is.

In the film, Verhaag speaks to various experts in the industry, including two scientists in particular whose lives have been ruined as a result of their inquiry into GE. Going against the flow, Arpad Pusztai and Ignacio Chapela questioned the “science” being peddled by the likes of Monsanto about GE, and instead sought to discover the real truth. In the process, they both ended up being threatened by the biotechnology industry and essentially losing their careers.

“The attack on scientists is very well-structured by the biotech industry,” says one scientist in the film....

USDA Refuses to Enforce Organic Standards, Allows Synthetic Additives in Horizon Organic Milk

Posted on Mar 23, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma – Kevin Hayden

Source: Natural News

The US Department of Agriculture is once again deliberately shirking its responsibility to properly oversee the integrity of the certified organic program. After admitting in a recent letter that a chemically-derived, synthetic omega-3 fatty acid additive produced by Martek Biosciences Corporation is not legitimately organic, the USDA also said it does not plan to take any enforcement action against companies that use it in certified organic products. The Cornucopia Institute (CI), a leading organic industry watchdog, continues to call the USDA out on the matter, exposing the fact that the additive not only has a questionable safety record, but also does not belong in any organic product.

The saga dates back to around 2002 when practically every major brand of infant formula began fortifying its blends with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA), two omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids naturally found in human breast milk. Manufacturers began to claim these blends were superior than others, and the closest thing to actual human breast milk (…).

The primary type of DHA and ARA used in the formulas, however, is the same laboratory-grown, synthetic variety made by Martek, which is now showing up in Horizon organic milk products.

Roundup, GMOs Linked to Emergence of Deadly New Pathogen Causing Spontaneous Abortions

Posted on Feb 24, 2011 in Featured Articles, Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Natural NewsInstitute for Science in Society

In a shocking warning letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, a highly experienced, ex-military pathogen researcher warns that the use of Roundup via GMO crops is resulting in the emergence of a deadly new pathogen — previously unknown to science — that’s causing widespread spontaneous abortions among cattle. The pathogen appears in high concentrations among even non-GMO crops that are “managed” through the use of glyphosate (Roundup) for weed control.

The complete letter can be found near the end of this page.

The letter is authored by Col. (Retired) Don M. Huber, a former Emeritus Professor at Purdue University. Huber was also the coordinator at the American Phytopathological Society, an organization that studies plant diseases and pathogens. Huber also sat on the committee for Emerging Diseases and Pathogens, chaired by an Agriculture Research Service (USDA) employee from Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Fort Detrick, you may remember, is also where the U.S. military conducts much of its biological warfare research through its United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories (…).  A few years ago, deadly pathogens “went missing” from this lab (…)....

German Report Exposes Horrors of Toxic GMO Soy

Posted on Feb 18, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Natural News – Ethan A. Huff

Widespread environmental pollution; poisoning and contamination of agriculture; countless injuries, deformities, and deaths in humans — these and many other horrific events are a result of cultivating genetically-modified (GM) crops, and GM soy in particular. A recent news documentary short that aired on German television exposes the massive destruction being caused by GM soy cultivation, and warns consumers that the food chain is more loaded with GM materials than they might think.

In Germany and throughout the European Union (EU), food products that contain GMOs must be properly labeled as such. As a result, there are few GM products on store shelves because, when made aware of their presence, consumers almost unanimously reject them. But what many people fail to realize, both in Europe and in the U.S., is that conventional livestock is often fed GM soy and corn, which ultimately ends up on store shelves in the form of conventional meat, milk, and eggs.

But the German documentary goes further, though, highlighting the other damage being cause by GM soy, including several cases of poisonings that have taken place in areas where GM soy is cultivated....

The Organic Elite Surrender to Bio-Tech Terrorist Monsanto – Why?

Posted on Feb 02, 2011 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Natural News

“The policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well. True coexistence is a must.” – Whole Foods Market, Jan. 21, 2011

Hayden’s Note:

Damn you, Whole Foods.  Damn you.

If you are not up to speed on the GMO issue, specifically involving (bio-tech terrorist) Monsanto and associated companies, you need to make this a priority.  Period.  I have focused on this issue extensively here on so there are dozens of in-depth articles found with the search bar at the top right.  Simply search for ‘GMO’ …

In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation’s 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America’s organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal. A self-appointed cabal of the Organic Elite, spearheaded by Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, has decided it’s time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto’s controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for “coexistence” with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack.

Hershey Reformulates UK Candy to Comply with Non-GMO Regulations, Not for US Market

Posted on Dec 27, 2010 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

The Hershey Company is expanding its confectionery market to Europe. And the company plans to reformulate its Europe-destined products to be free of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in order to meet demand and to comply with the non-GMO requirements of Asda, the U.K. subsidiary of Wal-Mart that will be Hershey’s exclusive retailer in the U.K. However, Hershey’s has no intentions of changing any of its U.S. formulas, all of which are tainted with GM ingredients, say reports.

According to an email obtained by GMWatch, an independent watchdog group fighting pro-GMO propaganda, Hershey’s agreed to reformulate 21 varieties of its chocolate products, including Reese’s brand chocolates, to meet Asda’s requirements. And a report in Confectionery News confirms this as well, noting that the reformulations are strictly for the European market and not for the U.S. market.

“The key ingredients which have been re-formulated from non-GM sources include changing the sugar source from beet to cane sugar and using IP (Identity Preservation) soy lecithin,” explained Julian Walker-Palin, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Asda, in an email to Peter Melchett, head of the U.K.

Leaked Reports Reveal US Threatened EU to Accept GMOs

Posted on Dec 24, 2010 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Natural News

The European Union (EU) has been largely resistant to adopting genetically-modified organisms (GMO), and rightly so considering their threat to human health and to the environment. But recently-released leaked cables have revealed that Bush Administration-appointed, former U.S. Ambassador to France Craig Roberts Stapleton threatened the EU with retaliation years ago if it did not comply with the interests of U.S. biotechnology giants like Monsanto.

Besides being slow to adopt “Frankenfoods”, France and several other European nations had proposed at the very least making biotechnology companies responsible for contamination caused by their GM seeds and pollen, just as any other industry would be responsible for their environmental pollution. But Stapleton and the special interests he represented could not tolerate this, and threatened to publicly release a “retaliation list” of European locations where GMOs were being test planted in order that protestors could destroy them and “cause some pain” for EU officials.

When the U.S. government-corporate industrial complex does not get its way, it resorts to vicious manipulation tactics to coerce its enemies into complying with its demands. And with biotechnology and drug companies, they must have it all in order to succeed in their endeavors, squashing any and all competition in the process.

Germany Bans Genetically Modified Corn, ‘Dangerous’ to Environment and Human Health

Posted on Dec 15, 2010 in Health, Food News, & Big Pharma

Source: Natural News

The German government has banned the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn, calling it “a danger to the environment.”

The cultivation of all other GM crops is already banned in Germany. The variety in question, known as MON 810, produces a pesticide inside its tissues to repel insects such as larvae of the corn borer moth. Such corn is also known as Bt corn, after the Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium that the toxin-producing genes come from.

MON 810 was approved for cultivation by the European Union in 1998, but E.U. law allows individual countries to impose their own bans. Such bans have since been implemented by Austria, France, Greece, Hungary and Luxemburg. According to German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner, Germany will now join their ranks.

The move was welcomed by environmental groups Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth Germany. Greenpeace spokesperson Stephanie Towe said that the decision is based on solid scientific evidence of environmental harm and should have been made long ago.

Critics say that GM crops can damage wildlife, spread their genetic material to wild relatives, and produce health problems in humans.

GMO Oranges and Apples Now?

Problem, reaction, solution: that’s the name of the game in the U.S., and it’s how sweeping changes that would otherwise never happen end up coming to pass. Currently, a widespread pest problem among citrus plants known as “greening” allegedly threatens the continued existence of orange fruit production, and the only way to fix it, say some, is to genetically-alter orange trees to resist the pest.

A recent report in Reuters explains that the Huanglongbing (HLB) bacteria, or “yellow dragon disease”, is ravaging orange groves throughout Florida. The disease was first identified in China more than 100 years ago, and it has now somehow spread to the U.S. where some experts say it could wipe out the majority or entirety of Florida’s orange groves within seven or eight years.

But instead of trying to address the root causes of the issue — causes that opponents of GMOs say include overuse of pesticides and nutrient-depleted soil — some government agencies are proposing that biotechnology companies be granted their wish to genetically-modify the trees to artificially resist the pest.
