In the world of genetically modified foods, it is rare to find a country or nation that has not been over-run with genetic contamination.  In the United States, the vast majority of all corn and soy is either intentionally engineered or has been contaminated.  Countless small farmers have gone bankrupt due to contamination of their corn crops and the subsequent lawsuits from Monsanto that quickly follow.  Large parts of Mexico continue to lose family heirloom varieties due to passing trucks dropping GE kernals on the sides of roads or pollen blowing in the wind from adjacent GMO fields.

But there are a few safe(r) havens for quality food.  Germany is one of the leaders in this field, banning or requiring labeling on GMO products; the UK – only due to consumer demand and a grassroots effort – requires labeling; but now Peru joins that crowd.  Peru’s Plenary Session of Congress enacted a ten-year moratorium on genetically modified crops in open defiance to the previous government administration’s pushes for legalization and embracement of GMOs.

Sadly, Peru’s neighbor, Brazil, has welcomed genetically modified foods with open arms, leading to scores of GMO crops being distributed worldwide.

Food Stamp Insanity: Perfectly Okay to Buy Lobster, Steak and Mountain Dew with Taxpayer Money

In a growing U.S. entitlement economy, where even $2 million lottery winners still collect food stamps, it should not be surprising to find that they can be used to purchase steaks, lobster and a whole lot of Mountain Dew.

Louis Wayne Cuff of Menominee, Mich., was arrested and charged with food stamp fraud last week for allegedly purchasing $141.78 worth of those items with a state-issued food stamp card, then selling them for 50 percent of their value.

The little enterprise could cost Cuff up to five years of his freedom and a $10,000 fine, the report said, but the greater issue is the fact that taxpayers – many of whom are struggling to make ends meet and would probably love to be able to afford to eat better themselves – are paying for steak, lobster and all the corn-syrup soda that some food-stamp recipients can pour down their throat. One particular case involved no less than 24 cases of Mountain Dew. Why was he even allowed to buy the soda in the first place?

Earlier this year, I was contacted by a PR firm working for Dow Chemical to contribute a 60-second video for The Future We Create virtual conference on water sustainability the company launches today. As a vocal advocate for strict regulation of toxic chemicals—especially for food and farming—I was surprised the company would approach me. Dow is the country’s largest chemical maker, and profits handsomely from developing some of the world’s most polluting products, many of which are widely used in industrial and consumer goods as well as agriculture.

In the video I submitted (posted above), I stress that one of the greatest threats to clean water is chemical contaminants—and that Dow Chemical has a long history of water pollution. The PR representative e-mailed to say “unfortunately we can’t use your video,” but that she would be happy to include me, still, if I would consider re-recording it. When we discussed what that would mean she said, no “fingerpointing;” they wanted a “positive, inclusive discussion.”

I believe in inclusiveness and engagement, but I also believe we must pursue those principles within a context that is honest....

Liberty and Victory Gardens Produce Abundance

Food is a market that will always exist.  Many people are turning away from industrial farmed food, seeking healthier choices and getting back to the basics.

Victory gardens in America produced up to 40% of all vegetables consumed during World War II. Over 20 million home gardens, apartment rooftop plants and community plots produced 9-10 million tons of produce; equal to the amount of commercial production at that time. The population during the war years increased from approximately 132 million people in 1940 to 140 million in 1945. Current US population is approaching 311 million people.

While the ‘Victory Gardens’ of the 40’s and 50’s were an amazing thing, I believe that this day in age, it would be more appropriate to call home gardening efforts “Liberty Gardens.”  Personal Liberty from the FDA, the USDA, the BioTech Agri-Terrorists such as Monsanto, rising food prices and oppressive government legislation.  Liberty Gardens.  Pass it around.

BPA Exposure Worse than Previously Estimated

According to a new study, exposure to the gender-bending chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) is worse than previously estimated. The study, which appeared Monday in Environmental Health Perspectives, is the first to recreate the chronic daily intake of BPA in humans, which leaches into our food–our primary channel for exposure–via its packaging. Researchers showed this by feeding a steady BPA-spiked diet to mice, whereas previous studies have only used a single exposure.

BPA has been linked to fertility problems, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, attention deficit disorder and cancer. Scientists at the University of Missouri, led by Cheryl Rosenfeld, found that a constant stream of BPA into the body could result in the chemical sticking around longer than expected.

“When BPA is taken through the food, the active form may remain in the body for a longer period of time than when it is provided through a single treatment, which does not reflect the continuous exposure that occurs in animal and human populations,” Rosenfeld said. “We need to study this further to determine where the ingested BPA becomes concentrated and subsequently released back into the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the body.”

She also considered that the consequences of this could be even more dire:

We know that the active form of BPA binds to our steroid receptors, meaning it can affect estrogen, thyroid and testosterone function.

After years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the USA contains arsenic, a cancer-causing toxic chemical that’s fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from: It’s added to the chicken feed on purpose!

Even worse, the FDA says its own research shows that the arsenic added to the chicken feed ends up in the chicken meat where it is consumed by humans. So for the last sixty years, American consumers who eat conventional chicken have been swallowing arsenic, a known cancer-causing chemical. (…)

A new report published by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) highlights some of the worst cosmetic products that cause harmful side effects. Among the most damaging are permanent hair dyes, facial and body moisturizers, cleansers, and even sunscreens, all of which are used by a significant portion of the overall population. And cases of severe reactions from such everyday-use products are widespread, say researchers.

Cosmetics, of course, imply much more than just make-up for women. Hair gels, toothpastes, mouthwashes, skin creams, body sprays, moisturizers, deodorants, and pretty much anything else a person applies to skin or hair is considered a cosmetic product. In other words, virtually every human being uses some kind of cosmetic product every single day.

According to the report, entitled National Register of Adverse Effects from Cosmetic Products 2008-2010, roughly 12 percent of survey respondents indicated that they experienced “very unpleasant adverse effects” as a result of applying common, conventional cosmetic products to their skin and hair. Some of these effects were so severe that respondents indicated that they had to be hospitalized.

Forensic Evidence Emerges that European E.Coli Superbug was Bioengineered to Produce Human Fatalities

Even as the veggie blame game is now under way across the EU, where a super resistant strain of e.coli is sickening patients and filling hospitals in Germany, virtually no one is talking about how e.coli could have magically become resistant to eight different classes of antibiotic drugs and then suddenly appeared in the food supply.

This particular e.coli variation is a member of the O104 strain, and O104 strains are almost never (normally) resistant to antibiotics. In order for them to acquire this resistance, they must be repeatedly exposed to antibiotics in order to provide the “mutation pressure” that nudges them toward complete drug immunity.

So if you’re curious about the origins of such a strain, you can essentially reverse engineer the genetic code of the e.coli and determine fairly accurately which antibiotics it was exposed to during its development. This step has now been done (see below), and when you look at the genetic decoding of this O104 strain now threatening food consumers across the EU, a fascinating picture emerges of how it must have come into existence....

The movement for reform to our flawed food system is growing stronger every day. Cooks, consumers, and campaigners alike are waking up in increasing numbers to the dangerous and unsustainable impacts of the way much of our food is grown, sold, and consumed.

This progress could not come at a more important moment. Our global food system works only for the few–for most of us it is broken. It leaves consumers lacking sufficient power and knowledge about what we buy and eat and almost a billion people hungry worldwide, millions of whom live here in the U.S.

The failure of the system flows from failures of government–failures to regulate, to correct, to protect, to resist, to invest–which mean that companies, interest groups, and elites are able to plunder our resources and to redirect flows of finance, knowledge, and food to suit themselves.

Support Efforts to Block GM Potato Plantings by Signing Petition

Eat to Defeat Cancer

Okay, so the title might be a bit mis-leading.  But if you’re not concerned with your blood sugar levels, you need to be.  I’m a fairly healthy, 28 year old male and the importance of avoiding massive amounts of refined carbs, sugars and fats is one of my biggest priorities.  I don’t have high blood pressure or tumorous cells… yet.  We Americans have been eating a highly-processed, horrible diet for decades and decades.  We eat out close to 60% of the time.  Even when cooking at home, we fill ourselves with starchy pastas, breads and grain-fed beef, covered in sauces containing high fructose corn syrup, washed down by 12 fl. oz. of sugar.  

Our body did not evolve to metabolize the large amount of carbohydrate calories we consume these days.  High levels of blood glucose are a significant underlying factor that leads to the development and proliferation of many age-related diseases. Diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and dementia are all accelerated by slowly increasing post meal blood sugar levels that cause needless suffering and death for millions of unsuspecting people each year....

Exposure to fluoride may lower children’s intelligence says a study pre-published in Environmental Health Perspectives, a publication of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (online December 17, 2010).  Fluoride is added to 70% of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

According to Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network, “This is the 24th study that has found this association, but this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children’s blood. This brings us closer to a cause and effect relationship between fluoride exposure and brain damage in children.”

“What is also striking is that the levels of the fluoride in the community where the lowered IQs were recorded were lower than the EPA’s so-called ‘safe’ drinking water standard for fluoride of 4 ppm and far too close for comfort to the levels used in artificial fluoridation programs (0.7 – 1.2 ppm),” says Connett....
