UPDATE:
Libya: Gaddafi Calls For Ceasefire as No-Fly Zone Begins
As soon as the UN Security Council approved military action against Libya, Gaddafi called a cease-fire, effectively preventing any Western powers to strike him without looking bad. I must say, he is a quack but well-played! If the French or British bomb him now, it would look very bad. Keep your eyes on this situation – it’s far from over. Minor Update: Obama says to Gaddafi, “Ceasefire not good enough…”
Yemeni Forces Open Fire at Protest, 30 Dead
Yemeni security forces and unidentified snipers opened fire at a protest in Sanaa after Muslim prayers Friday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 200 others, medical sources and witnesses told Reuters. (Reuters)
Israel Threatens ‘military action’ if Iran Refuses to Stop Nuclear Program
Israeli PM said Iran has enough material for almost three nuclear bombs. Israel’s Prime Minister said the world must make clear that Iran would face ‘credible military action’ if sanctions do not shut down Tehran’s disputed nuclear program. Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning comes as Malaysian police found equipment they suspect could be used to make nuclear weapons smuggled on board a ship headed to Iran. Mr Netanyahu said this week it was clear Iran was pursuing its nuclear ambitions despite international sanctions and had enough material for almost three nuclear bombs. (DailyMail) – Hayden’s Note: So why can Israel have a large, state-of-the-art nuclear arsenal and Iran can’t? Furthermore, why isn’t Israel a signatory on the Non-Proliferation Treaty like every other nuclear nation is? If you believe in freedoms and personal liberty, that doesn’t mean “freedom for a select few.” It means everyone and that is achieved through diplomacy, not violence and expansion. Ask questions, people.
United Nations Approves Military Action and No-Fly Zone Against Libya
The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution ordering a no-fly zone over Libya, while suspending the country from the Human Rights Council. Resolution 1970 authorizes a no-fly zone over Libya and to allow “all necessary measures” to be taken “to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in (Libya), including Benghazi, while excluding an occupation force,” Reuters reported on Thursday. It allows for airstrikes to halt Gaddafi’s offensive against the revolutionary forces in Libya.
