The Justice Department is funding an unusual national training program to help police deal with an increasing number of volatile confrontations involving highly trained and often heavily armed combat veterans.

Developers of the pilot program, to be launched at 15 U.S. sites this year, said there is an “urgent need” to de-escalate crises in which even SWAT teams may be facing tactical disadvantages against mentally ill suspects who also happen to be trained in modern warfare.

“We just can’t use the blazing-guns approach anymore when dealing with disturbed individuals who are highly trained in all kinds of tactical operations, including guerrilla warfare,” said Dennis Cusick, executive director of the Upper Midwest Community Policing Institute. “That goes beyond the experience of SWAT teams.”

Everyone agrees that water is a must have essential at the top of the list for survival preparations. Consequently, there are a lot of products on the market for cleaning up contaminated water to make it fit for human consumption. This paper takes a quick look at the advantages of ceramic cartridges versus other filter types and discusses a few key issues.

What is a ceramic water filter?

The ceramic filter consists of a porous ceramic shell and usually is sold as a sealed cartridge that contains some additional water purification media. A picture of a dome shaped filter is shown below but they can be manufactured in various shapes and sizes. The outer shell of the ceramic cartridge filters out bacteria using sub-micron sized pore openings. (A micron is a millionth of a meter). In addition, many chemicals can be filtered out using ‘broad spectrum’ activated carbon inside the shell. Specialized filters to remove particular chemicals such as fluoride or arsenic can also be manufactured by using other media in place of the carbon.

What are the advantages of these filters?

Some other popular types of filters just utilize small pore openings to strain out bacteria but do nothing to treat the water for pesticides, fertilizers, or petroleum based products that may be present in the lake or river that is being used as the water source. Other types of water filters will just use activated carbon for the chemicals but not have small enough filter pores to eliminate bacteria....

Most Americans would consider the following report to be nothing out of the ordinary. But for those in the know, given what has transpired over the last several years, it raises alarm bells:

Joint military training exercises will be held evenings in downtown Los Angeles through Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The LAPD will be providing support for the exercises, which will also be held in other portions of the greater Los Angeles area, police said.

Training sites “have been carefully selected to ensure the event does not negatively impact the citizens of Los Angeles and their daily routine,” a department official said.

The training, which a department official said would involve helicopters, has been coordinated with local authorities and owners of the training sites, police said.

Police said safety precautions have been taken to prevent risk to the general public and military personnel involved.

The exercises are closed to the public, police said.

The exercises are designed to ensure the military’s ability to operate in urban environments, prepare forces for upcoming overseas deployments, and meet mandatory training certification requirements, police said.

This week, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was detained by the TSA in Nashville after refusing to be fondled by the airport agents.

Paul has been a vocal enemy of the TSA, blasting the agency last year after agents conducted an invasive search of a 6-year old girl despite her parents’ objections. TSA Director John Pistole suggested that, because a young child in Afghanistan is capable of detonating a roadside bomb, all children should be considered potential threats.

Paul raised the issue again yesterday in an opinion piece. As usual, the Obama administration closed ranks around the TSA yesterday, defending the agency and insisting that “we take necessary actions to ensure that air travel is safe.” Such as treating 6-year old girls like criminal terrorists.

Air travel is never going to be safe. We’re talking about a 500,000 pound flying building crammed with hundreds of strangers criss-crossing the skies nearly 100,000 times in a single day. There’s a lot of room for things to go wrong.

Criminalizing travel, which is the effective net result of the current passenger screening process, has minimal impact on weeding out the boogeyman....

On average, Americans consume 475 calories worth of added sugars each day. That is about 30 teaspoons, or 5x more than even the American Heart Association recommends.

The disturbing aspect is that if nothing changes, the rampant sugar consumption continues, and cumulatively begins bearing down on your health in the form of diseases like diabetes and cancer.

In a follow-up to my recent interview on Adam vs. the Man, it would appear as though many police officers within the New Orleans Police Department are … upset … with what I said.  I’ve received threats, comments, condemning messages, and more from many officers that I once considered friends or colleagues.  The subject and rhetoric of many of these messages resonates with cognitive dissonance, suggesting that I’m the bad guy for talking about these subjects, or that I have an agenda by speaking out against the police state.

Well, they are partially correct.  My agenda is to awaken the average person to just how corrupt their police department truly is.  It is truly unfathomable for most, including some police officers.  They have blinders on, not even recognizing the injustices that they perpetrate.  I have found that the common person is shocked by what I once considered a daily routine, or normal practice, as a police officer and that needs to change.  Light needs to be cast upon the shadows within law enforcement, and especially within the ranks of the New Orleans Police Department.  It is truly more corrupt than even Hollywood portrays it as....

But a new study out of the University of Reading (UR) in the UK has found that, based on tests conducted, nearly every single woman with breast cancer has one or more paraben chemicals in her breast tissue, suggesting a possible link between the chemical and the disease.

New helicopter-style drones with 1.8 gigapixel colour cameras are being developed by the US Army.

The army said the technology promised “an unprecedented capability to track and monitor activity on the ground”.

It offers 900 times the number of pixels of a 2 megapixel camera found in some mobile phones. The system can provide real-time video streams at the rate of 10 frames a second.

The army said that was enough to track people and vehicles from altitudes above 20,000 feet (6.1km) across almost 65 square miles (168 sq km).

In addition, operators on the ground can select up to 65 steerable “windows” following separate targets to be “stared at”. Vehicles, people and other objects can be tracked even if they move in different directions.

“If you have a bunch of people leaving a place at the same time, they no longer have to say, ‘Do I follow vehicle one, two, three or four,’” said program manager Brian Leninger ahead of the system’s launch.

“They can say: ‘I will follow all of them, simultaneously and automatically.’”...

The risk of artificial sweeteners is still very real.  Aspartame is used as a substitute sweetener in thousands of products. Most diet sodas, processed foods and candies contain this ‘alternative’ to sugar.

If you aren’t careful, you’ll easily run into it somewhere in your food.

Aspartame is marketed not by its real name, but through products like Equal and NutraSweet. This is because aspartame itself has a bad reputation as a dangerous excitotoxin. An excitotoxin is named for its ability to ‘excite’ the cells of the body into overproducing a particular chemical, thus burning them out prematurely. Aspartame, in particular, has been found to affect brain cells, by mimicking the response to sweetness and producing an artificial form of it.

One study actually found that 67% of female rats exposed to aspartame developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger.

When you consume an aspartame-sweetened product, its effect can translate into a number of neurological symptoms like headaches, fatigue, vision problems, and anxiety. These will continue to manifest until the user eliminates it from their diet completely....

After years of rebuffing health concerns over airport scanners, the Transportation Security Administration plans to conduct new tests on the potential radiation exposure from the machines at more than 100 airports nationwide.

But the TSA does not plan to retest the machines or passengers. Instead, the agency plans to test its airport security officers to see if they are being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation while working with the scanners.

News of the test leaked out after the TSA issued a request last month to government vendors to provide wearable, personal dosimeters, devices that measure exposure to radiation.

Clear Channel owns more radio stations (850) than anyone else in the United States.  They also own Premiere Radio Networks, the company that syndicates the radio shows of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck, among others.  Needless to say, Clear Channel basically owns conservative talk radio in the United States.  So who owns Clear Channel?  Well, it turns out that Bain Capital is one of the primary owners of Clear Channel.  Yes, you read that correctly.  The company that Mitt Romney ran for so long is one of the “big bosses” over virtually all conservative talk radio in America....

Companion planting makes use of specific plants as insect repellant and growth stimulators. The chemical make-up of some plants are simply unattractive to various insects and attractive to certain plant growth.

Planting beans near or among potatoes will limit the amount of Colorado potato beetles present. The potatoes, in turn, discourage Mexican bean beetles. I was a police officer for over 5 years and maintained the award of Pistol Master every year.  I have taught individual classes and group lessons in a variety of conditions and environments, but one thing that I find intriguing is the difference between training males and females.

Females have a natural ability to become very proficient with handguns and will listen to the instructor.  Men, on the other hand, approach firearms training like anything else; “I already know everything there is to know – and if I don’t, I certainly won’t ask for help.  I’ll just act like I know what I’m doing so as not to embarrass myself or allow the other guys to think I’m inferior.”

It’s the Alpha-dog complex.  And I understand that, being a guy.  But when it comes to handgun proficiency – or firearms in general, for that matter – an unassuming, “leave your ego at the door” type of approach is required.  If you’re familiar with the movie, ‘The Matrix’, you’ll recall when the little boy told Neo, “…there is no spoon.”  If you have limited experience in shooting or gun handling, that is the best advice I can give you....

During a societal collapse or SHTF scenario, is living in an urban environment a safe and prudent option?

Let’s dive into a few of the aspects and dangers of the cityscape, what to expect, and how you might mitigate some of the threat as you either escape from the concrete jungle or try to ride it out.  This does not apply for short, temporary natural disasters; rather, this will examine a potential economic meltdown, long-term survival situation, possible military action, or perhaps an electromagnetic event of some order that brings down the grid.

Living within a major metropolitan area has its ups and down, its benefits and drawbacks. This applies to any decent sized urban area as they all typically have common systems, such as municipal water and sewage, fragile electrical grids that in many cases provide the power for heating your home and cooking, and finally – people.

Large population centers can be your worst nightmare in a survival situation, as witnessed during Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent social collapse that occurred in New Orleans....

A new study from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts confirms that natural cranberry juice is more effective in fighting infections than pills containing concentrated doses of the flavonoids found in cranberries. The study published in the Food Science and Biotechnology journal was led by Dr. Terri Camesano, professor of chemical engineering.

This applies to almost everything in nature.  When you take a raw food straight from the ground, vine, or tree, you are consuming living, wholesome nutrients.  When you take a condensed, super-packed, “super-effective” pill – no matter the concentration levels or what the advertisements say – you are eating dead food.  Will you still get some benefits?  Sure. But no where near the amount when consuming living or raw foods.  As an added bonus, these pills are often packed with cellulose (indigestible wood pulp), acids, jet fuel by-products, and much more.

As a side note, if heating vegetables, try to keep the temperatures very, very low.  The higher the temp, the more nutrients you are losing from the food....

In what can only be described as a food freedom win, the FDA has reversed their decision to de-regulate antibiotic use in livestock, poultry, and swine.  I wrote about this a few weeks ago and mentioned that CAFOs, or Confined/Commercial Animal Feeding Operations, accounted for roughly 80% of the antibiotic use in America.  That is a staggering figure!

These commercial farms inject the animals with sub-therapeutic levels of common antibiotics in order to accelerate weight gains, not to mention the fact that cows and other livestock tend to suffer from a variety of ailments and disease when fed a diet of GMO corn, soy, and other grains in these tightly packed, unsanitary commercial lots.

Cows, as we all learned in elementary school, eat grass all day, and the cheaply made, genetically modified grains they are fed in CAFOs disrupt their normal digestive system, to say the least.
